Expanding the "recent posts" list on the home page
« on: September 05, 2018, 08:46:46 pm »
It used to be I could catch any new posts of interest to me, within the past day or two, by looking over the "recent posts" list rather than dig into individual boards such as "Updates to Highway Data". With more posts on the forum, it's harder to do that. In particular, right now the list shows nothing before 1pm today forum time, which means the list doesn't include many posts after I checked out of my hotel early this morning to catch an afternoon ferry.

One straightforward fix, to accommodate the increased discussion, would be to at least double the size of the "recent posts" list, to at least 30.

"Show unread posts since last visit" won't give you the entire list? It gave me about 10 days' worth of posts once.

"Recent Posts" I think is hardwired @ 10 in SMF.  I'll see if there's a possible setting to adjust it, but I don't think it will be possible.

EDIT: Found the setting.  It's now @ 30.

It's how I always find what's new since I last looked.  First link at the top left below your "Hello <yourname>".

Ok, I've never seen it. Maybe we can highlight it with a different font size or in bold?
I just don't like the long "recent posts" list. It's awful having so much information on the start page.....

Well, just my 2c :)

Then maybe this is the link you want Oscar?

http://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0

If that link works for ya, maybe as a compromise, I can cut down the "recent posts" on the front page to 15?

I think it was at 20 before it was increased to 30.  Ideally IMO it would be a multiple of 10 since that's what the recent posts pages off the list on the home page use.

No, it was @ 10 before I changed the setting.

I definitely remember having 20 posts on that list on the home page, so that's interesting.  AARoads has 10, and TM has always had about double what they have.  The recent posts page is definitely 10, both before and after the change.

The recent posts page is definitely 10, both before and after the change.

That one is controlled on the end user side.  Forum default for that is 20, but users can change it via the following location:
Profile -> Modify Profile ->  Look and Layout  -> "Topics to display per page:"
