NM: US 54 and 84 in Santa Rosa?
« on: June 14, 2018, 01:01:44 pm »
TM shows eastbound US 54 routed on I-40 beginning at exit 275, and eastbound US 84 leaving I-40 at exit 277. However, that isn't consistent with the Wikipedia page for I-40, which suggests that US 54 and 84 follow as much of the business loop as possible through Santa Rosa. According to that exit list, I-40 isn't concurrent with anything between exit 273 and 277, US 84 is routed on the entire business loop, and US 54 is routed on the business loop from the junction just west of downtown Santa Rosa all the way to exit 277.

I understand this is NM, and signage is often poor/confusing/unclear to begin with. But the reason I bring this up is that there are US 54 signs posted on the east half of the business loop, between exit 275 and 277 (here and here). Also, at the junction between US 54 and the business loop just west of downtown, US 84 is clearly signed on the business loop.

I'll look at this. My initial look indicates the signage on the ground might be so confusing and conflicting (for example, a US 84 sign on I-40 east of exit 273) that we might just leave things as is for lack of a clearly better alternative.

I looked at the 2010 route log, which is also confusing. I'll have to look for a later version, if any, on the NMDOT website. There is an interactive map, which has US 84 following I-40 between exits 273 and 277, but US 54 following the I-40 business route between exits 275 and 277.

The latest route definitions are from 2010. But I did find one set for New Mexico's business loops. The definition of business loop 35 (BL I-40 in Santa Rosa) suggests that it is concurrent with US 54 only from its junction with US 54 south, to I-40 exit 275. It also indicates that its concurrence with US 84 is only about 0.134 mile within the I-40 exit 277 interchange.

GMSV shows wildly inconsistent signage, including for the US 54 concurrence with the business loop, which WB I-40 signage has 54 leaving the Interstate at exit 277, but signage on the EB business loop directs US 54 travelers onto the Interstate at exit 275. As noted here and elsewhere, New Mexico's route signage is often a joke, and remnant signage abounds on roads long bypassed by the Interstates (for example, US 80 signage in Deming, decades after the route's west end was truncated to Dallas).

So I'm going to leave US 54 and US 84 in Santa Rosa as is.

Thanks for checking. To be fair, the US 54 shield on the westbound BL between 277 and 275 is an older spec and looks fairly old, so there's a chance it predates the interstate. But the eastbound 54/84 and the rest of the conflicting signage looks fairly new.
