New HDX "Release Candidate"
« on: August 06, 2018, 03:59:19 pm »
There's a new HDX version I've made available for testing that I'd again be happy to have you try and critique when you have a chance.

Most of the new functionality is related to the algorithm visualization system, but I've done things like restoring the "Show Hidden Markers" and it's now possible to load different data without reloading the page.

I'm calling this one a "release candidate" as I hope to make it the default version of HDX by the end of the week.  The release candidate version is installed at

http://courses.teresco.org/metal/hdxrc/

I'd be happy to hear your feedback here or you're welcome to open issues on GitHub (https://github.com/TravelMapping/EduTools)

Thanks. Just some feedback:

1. Load http://courses.teresco.org/metal/hdxrc/
2. Option 1: Enter deu-he --> no hit
3. Option 1: Enter hes --> Hesse (state) found
4. Select Hesse (state) by mouse --> nothing happens, wait, wait,...
5. Press Enter --> graph is loaded within 1..2 seconds --> great!
6. Read "Algorithm Visualization Selection and Options", press done
7. header appears with some options, cool. Select "Show Hidden Markers" --> nothing happens
8. wish to have an option to deselect "Show Markers" (All markers)
9. Deselect "Show Data Table" -> works
10. Press "Select AV" --> black graph, no markers --> strange...
11. Read "Algorithm Visualization Selection and Options", press done
12. header appears again
13. wanna deselect "black mode", press "Select AV" again, just the text again, press done again
14. press "Load Data options"
15. Option 1: Enter bav --> Bavaria (state) found
16. Select Bavaria (state) by mouse and press enter --> loaded colorful
17. Press done again
18. press "Load Data options" --> black mode again
19. click to Option 1 where Bavaria (State) is still displayed, press enter --> loaded colorful
20. press "Load Data options" --> black mode again
21. press "cancel" --> game over (header missing)
22. ok, zoom-in and -out by using the +/- buttons, move the map (is this called "pan"?) and grey map. Really game over now even after waiting about 60s.

@michih thanks for the feedback - I hope to improve/fix some of that going forward.

The default HDX version is now the one with this summer's enhancements: http://courses.teresco.org/metal/hdx/

The version that's been out there for quite a while is archived and should remain functional indefinitely at http://courses.teresco.org/metal/hdxpre2018/

In fixing NMPs, I'm having trouble adapting to how long waypoint names are truncated in the table.

Searching for the string mb203@MB210_S yields no results. When this happens, I hit backspace to remove truncated characters until I get a partial match. Usually, the result is the point I'm actually looking for. Sometimes not -- I have to truncate to mb203@ to get a result for that string, which as you can see will not give the most useful result.
On to the other point in the NMP pair, then... mb210@MB203_W --> no hits --> mb210@MB20 --> a hit for MB210@MB207_W :-\

In this case, this served as a distraction & delay to me figuring out what I really needed to, that the labels I'm looking for are actually MB203_W/MB210_N and MB203_E/MB210_S. (Nothing new here; I had to be aware of this label collapsing with the old HDX too.) Searching for a partial label using MB210_N or MB210_S doesn't work, as this part gets truncated; I have to search for 203_E and 203_W instead.

I could adapt to this new way of doing things; time will tell.

In a similar vein, displaying point coords to six decimal places would simplify searching for points by location.

I think a way to approach this is that the full names and coordinates could be used until or unless someone starts an algorithm visualization.  I don't think it's too hard and hopefully I can knock that off before classes start.

I have no issue with this. Sounds like a good compromise.
