TX: I-45
« on: September 23, 2018, 03:44:02 am »
Some minor issues I saw when I just randomly decided to look at the route to see if any new exits had been added and were missing from TM.

1) What we have as exit 69, is really posted as 70A going NB, but 68 going SB.  Based on the road we have the point on and what the BGS destinations listed & comparing #'s, I'd recommend a compromise as 68A.
2) 78 -> 77A?  Tamina Road (where '78' is located) is one of the destinations listed on Exit 77 signage.
3) 91 -> 90 --- All signage for League Line Road says Exit 90, not 91.
4) NEW -> 105???  According to Wikipedia, there's a new 'temporary' exit 105 while the SB ramps for 103 are closed till May '19.  Can't find any Satellite or StreetView imagery to back this up, so take this with a grain of salt unless you can find proof.   "Esri WorldImagery" imagery does show what looks like to be construction of said ramp at a location of an old rest area however.
5) 117? ===  I've seen other small gaped exit numbers have separate exits along I-45 so far.  Maybe put a point for it @ Crosstimbers Street?  Just thought I'd throw this out there.

68A, agreed.
While checking out the area in WPTedit, I noticed that southbound, Exit 72 is split into 72A & 72B. Existing 72 could be relabeled to 72B, with 72A added here. Thoughts?

Meh.

Yes. 117 added @ Crosstimbers.

While checking out the area in WPTedit, I noticed that southbound, Exit 72 is split into 72A & 72B. Existing 72 could be relabeled to 72B, with 72A added here. Thoughts?

I was looking @ 72 myself when I was making this post, but thought about not opening a bag of worms with it.  However, since you brought it up yourself, I agree fully with this suggestion.

Something else I just noticed as well.  While looking @ 72 again, I noticed some more issues in the 73 to 79 range.

The distance between 73 & 76 is 2.1 miles.  The direct ramps @ '76' are really 76B going NB & '76A' is down by 73.  76A is signed for Robinson Rd, which is where the current 76 point is located at.  Due to this I either recommend a split in the distance, maybe a '76A' point either @ the ramps leaving I-45 or @ Nursery Rd & renumbering 76 as 76B.

A similar issue happens with 77A & 79.  Another 2.1 miles apart, with a separate 79A (the free ramp) from 79.  With the location of the '79A' NB ramps, an extra point could be justified.  Here's the full recommendations I have that you can plug into WPT and see if you agree with me.

Code: [Select]
73 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.126778&lon=-95.443195
76A http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.140688&lon=-95.446000
76B +76 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.156975&lon=-95.449374
77 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.167340&lon=-95.450818
77A http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.178262&lon=-95.451821
79A http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.191547&lon=-95.453446
79 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.207422&lon=-95.456193

The new points are 76A & 79A, with 76 demoted as in-use.

I've spent a LOT of time looking at Texas and its frontage roads. First 2½ years of Texas Cleanup, then three tier-4 state systems. :) Here's the philosophy I've developed along the way...

Our starting point is that points are placed at the center, at the crossroads, of an interchange. IE, ME US1 NewMeaRd should be centered here and not here.
Things get murky in TX, with sprawling elongated interchanges that frequently have a 50% overlap with adjacent interchanges. (Makes me think of MDCT blocks in audio codecs, mumble mumble...)
As I alluded to in the TX: I-35 thread, I "normally go with where the major crossroad is located," with a grade-separated crossing or numbered highway usually getting the nod. These almost always coincide with the destinations listed on BGSes. Thus 76A for Robinson Rd and 76B for Woodlands Pkwy both map to the same location, and thus collapse into a single point.

I almost considered a point at Vision Park Blvd ("79A"), but decided against that too. The SB offramp & NB onramp, I consider part of "77A", at Tamina & Research Forest. The SB onramp & NB offramp, I consider part of "79", at Needham & College Park. And at that point, it's much like the above case.
I like to see things as (sometimes glorified) volleyball interchanges in TX when I can; the frontage roads will set things up that way a lot of the time. Direct connectors as we see here, I will downplay as simply redundant connections within that framework.

Direct connectors vs volleyball, combined with GMSV = I've talked myself out of splitting Exit 72. Marking solved.
