WA: SR 99 has a gap in Tukwila
« on: September 23, 2016, 03:31:09 pm »
I noticed that State Route 99 is shown on the highway browser as going through the city of Tukwila, when in reality the section of this highway between SR 518 and SR 599 has not existed since 2004, resulting in there being a gap in SR 99. Can someone please update this?

I took a peek at the latest WSDOT route log, which seems to confirm (at p. 876) the "physical gap" in WA 99 through Tukwila. OTOH, OpenStreetMap (our favorite online mapping resource, though not gospel truth) shows no gap.

Before one of us adds this proposed change to our queue:

-- Is there anything else confirming that there is a gap, such as END WA 99 signage at one or both ends of the gap, or no remnant old WA 99 signage within the gap?

-- Any other gaps in WA 99, or other route changes, we should be aware of?

Thanks.

OSM is wrong in this case. I clinched SR 99 a couple days ago and I didn't see any reassurance markers on this section.

EDIT: Looking at Google Street View, I see an END 99 BEGIN 599 sign on the southbound lanes of the 99/599 freeway. Also, if you look at the legal definition of SR 99, it says:
Quote
State route No. 99.
A state highway to be known as state route number 99 is established as follows:
Beginning at a junction with state route number 18 in the vicinity of Federal Way, thence northerly by way of Midway, to a junction with state route 518 in Tukwila; also
Beginning at a junction with state route number 599 in the vicinity of Tukwila, thence northerly by way of Seattle, Edmonds, and Lynnwood to a junction with state route number 5 in Everett...

Based on memory when I clinched it, there are no signs indicating SR 99 ends, save perhaps the END 99/BEGIN 599 on the southbound side. 99 simply vanishes into the nether.
And that END 99 sign isn't even what would be on the 99's alignment; that would be the offramp to Tukwila Blvd.

A lot of street signs for Hwy 99 show the 99 shield on the street sign. This is not the case in Tukwila, further proving that SR 99 does not exist between SR 518 and SR 599.

I took @yakra's suggestion and kept the northern (longer) segment as the one without a city name, and used Federal Way for the southern half.  This is in the site update currently in progress.  Should be live on site before 11:30 PM EST.

Thanks! I wasn't sure which section should end up with the city name.
