TX: TX 550 and Spur 259
« on: August 26, 2017, 11:00:01 pm »
Couple things I found on a recent trip to south Texas:

Are there possibly two TX 550s?

The photo was taken on TX 550 northbound, just north of TX 48. The exit sign shows that a route called TX 550 is leaving the highway, which continues on as Toll 550. TX 550 doesn't go anywhere (it just becomes a frontage road that ends at a u-turn and heads back to the southbound highway prior to its end at TX 48) but it is signed along the way.

At the I-69E end, there are separate exits for TX 550 and Toll 550.  Following the exit labelled TX550, the only signage is for FM 511 and "To Toll 550".

Also, the ramps linking Loop 20 to TX 359 in Laredo were signed Spur 259 when I was there. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a picture, not realizing the route wasn't in the HB, but I found this TxDOT documentation mentioning the number (see the last minute order on the page).

TX550:
Numbered Toll Roads, I lumped into a "parent system"; USATX, USATXL or USATXS as appropriate.
I'm not making any distinctions of toll/mainline vs. free/frontage for same-numbered routes.
The exception is for different designations, such as President George Bush Turnpike vs. TX161 or TX190.
I discussed this a bit during peer review on AARoads.
I'll be leaving this as-is.

From what I remember of reading the designation files during development, this makes perfect sense.

TXSpr259:
I remember coming across that one during development, and leaving it out as unsigned.
If it's signed, I may need to add it in. Where do you remember the sign being?

Note to self:
TXLp20 could possibly use points at Cielito Lindo Blvd & Lomas Del Sur Blvd. These have "future interchange" written all over them. I'll see how they work out WRT the Half Mile Rule. Edit: Done.

OK, makes sense.

On TX 359. GMSV has not been updated. I remember it being there because I was on TX 359 looking for a sign to Loop 20 south, and never saw one. Eventually I figured out I needed to follow Spur 259. I'm pretty sure there was a sign on Spur 259 itself also, southbound at least.
