The thing is it seems most people prefer to spend their time drafting systems over peer reviewing them. The result is we have a backlog of preview systems that aren't getting activated since they haven't been reviewed. This one is going to join that queue once it's done...

We indicate on the main site that "Highly experienced users can learn how to plot new highway systems". I think that you maximum "have learned the project's structure and highway data rules and guidelines" and "can help greatly by providing review of new highway systems in development".

Your time spent on the new system is not lost since you have documented a lot on the forum and you can also start drafting the files after your first review(s). I've minimum reviewed 2 or 3 large systems before drafting my first system.

I've started drafting the system.

Mexico has some important differences from other places I'm familiar with.

Routes are not officially defined through many cities and towns. Sometimes signage makes the route obvious, but often it muddles things. Splitting the route at every such town or city is a nonstarter for two major reasons: (a) it would be horribly messy to have twenty different segments of a route that need to be entered individually, especially when most connections don't even need signage due to a lack of turns, and (b) sources wildly disagree on what is or is not federally maintained, and there is usually no indication when driving that the owner changes.

For these reasons, I am not splitting routes at maintenance gaps through cities. So how do we define the route? If there are multiple possibilities, I'm going down the following list and choosing the first that applies.
  • Is there a single consistently signed route?
  • If not, is there a route consistently signed for through traffic to the next city on the route?
  • If not, which signed route makes the least number of turns?
Any other signed route may be added as an alternate.

I am also using street names instead of route numbers at junctions in cities where it is not completely obvious that that the route number goes that way and only that way. This avoids issues where a traveler may have taken 47 into town to the junction with what is signed as 52, but through traffic on 52 is routed differently.

Spurs are inconsistently signed and inventoried. A road splitting from 47 may be listed in one source as 47, but omitted entirely from another. Signs may have 47 shields, blank shields, or no shields at all. 47 shields may point down roads that are not in any non-signage sources I could find, or may even be a general statement that the named town is going to be on the side of the road up ahead.

I need to come up with criteria for which spurs to include.

Street names are nonexistent in rural areas and usually badly signed in towns and cities. Sources often disagree on names. So instead of street names for rural point labels, I use place names, either the place the point is in or the place the road leads to. This is also how I name junctions with potential spurs, at least until I decide whether the spur is real.
