Title: SC US17ConMyr missing?
Post by: ntallyn on December 30, 2019, 03:48:06 pm
US17Con Myrtle Beach is mentioned on both ends as waypoints on US17 and US17BusMyr, but it is not listed in the highway browser. Is is signed? Is the file missing, or should the waypoints be renamed (Kings Highway?)?

Google Street View confirms (https://goo.gl/maps/rw1q8j5XzGCBddAt9) my recollection that it is simply signed as Business 17 from the mainline, and there is a northbound reassurance shield indicating such (https://goo.gl/maps/wQabyBQPcg48qbgE9) even though we technically haven't reached business 17 yet. Southbound signage only points toward mainline US 17, as signed from business 17 (https://goo.gl/maps/TGrgPZvtckcqHp1Q7) and on a reassurance shield after the split (https://goo.gl/maps/Zisarr5WmvJrsFFq5).

If that is enough signage to label it a separate route (maybe a separate segment of Business 17) and not just a ramp, should it be renamed to US17ConGar since it is located in Garden City limits, not Myrtle Beach?

This connector doesn't meet the criteria to be in TM as its own US17ConGar file because there is no CONN signage.

It would however make some sense to split US 17 Bus into two files with US 17 Bus Myrtle Beach being the connector and the rest northward while having a US 17 Bus Murrells Inlet be the original US 17 Business route in this area, ending at US 17 Bus Myrtle Beach

The suffix for this connector is "Mur" for Murrells Inlet, not "Myr" for Myrtle Beach. The south end of the connector is in Murrells Inlet, while the north end is in Garden City.

I am against this.  The best comparison I see to this is VA US460BusChr, which was originally two business routes (separate ones for Christiansburg and Blacksburg) until the freeway connecting the two bypasses opened in 2003 combined them.

Seeing that VA US460BusChr is one route, I cannot see any reason that US17BusMyr should be two routes especially with signage on the route itself indicating that it turns (https://www.google.com/maps/@33.577845,-79.0239058,3a,75y,249.17h,90.2t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sInFDxlhLJh5hNXVWqeus0w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

I was just through there (and took the route northbound). It isn't signed as US17 Conn, and doesn't feel like anything more than a glorified exit ramp. Should the points on US17 and US17Bus be labeled "ToUS17Bus" and "ToUS17"?

The "US17Con" labels probably derive from South Carolina's GIS reference, which defines that route as US 17 Connection.

I would be in favor of what Mapmikey suggested above. Is the "connector" a ramp? Maybe, but it is definitely intended as the mainline for southbound traffic on 17 Business, and it even has a couple separate intersections south of where the route to Murrells Inlet jumps off. That southbound signage could also be interpreted as a new business route beginning to the south, with the mainline 17 shield simply intended to avoid the confusion that results from two Business 17s intersecting.

This situation is exactly like the new US 17 Connector piece created from the extension of the New Bern NC US 17 Bypass southward.  Once extended the bypass left behind its original connection over to original 17.  The connector road is still available to use between the Bypass and Business route.

The BGS on the Bypass just refers to the connector as US 17 Business.  No idea what the Business route postings are for this connector right now.  NCDOT has not updated county maps or provided a route change sheet for this extension.

In this case the connector is no longer in TM either...

For the Myrtle Beach example, I did check GMSV to see if the Connector has small markers delineating this as a ramp and saw none.

This connector is not very long (especially compared to some other SC connectors which we deleted that have lengths >1 mile) so it doesn't much matter to me in the grand scheme if it is clinchable in TM.

Does SCDOT consider the US 17 Business route for Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet as one route or two different routes?

A case of missing TO signage?

I'm not seeing a way to determine this given resources available on SCDOT's website.  Their GIS stuff chops there roads down into teeny segments between each two intersecting roads.

One piece of evidence that they were at least two routes at one time is their AASHTO application in 1980 for the Myrtle Beach business route did include what is clearly US 17 CONN now.

I think that the SCDOT RIS (https://ris.scdot.org/RoadwayInformationStreetFinder.aspx?county=26&municipality=surfside%20beach&street=S+Hwy+17+Bus&lrs=26020001707N&bmp=0&emp=3.79&map=y) answers this question well enough to drop this thread entirely and not even consider adding US17ConMyr.

A case of missing TO signage?

That's how I'd interpret this. Signage from 17 says 17Bus. Signage from 17Bus says 17. Nothing says Connector.

That said the "US17ConMyr" waypoint labels should then be changed to "ToUS17Bus" and "ToUS17".

SC is odd because they have so many unsigned connector routes.  I think that my position on those labels at the time of my SC Peer Review was to use the RIS/Street Finder to indicate whether these routes were legitimate connectors or not, and make comments as needed based on that.

I had not really experienced the "ToSC277" version of labels until I found labels like that in Puerto Rico (e.g., "ToPR181") because there was nothing else to label them.
