Title: I just joined and I have some questions
Post by: 7/8 on July 06, 2016, 06:37:07 pm
I signed up today and I'm looking forward to joining this; it seems like a cool site  :) However, I have some questions to ask.

1) My username has a slash in it, will this be a problem? I can't save my .list file as 7/8 due to the slash. If this is a problem, can a mod change my username to 7_8?
2) This link http://tm.teresco.org/devel/hb.php (http://tm.teresco.org/devel/hb.php) is not working for me (it's says "Not Found"). I've tried both Chrome and Explorer. I'm using this link http://cmap.m-plex.com/hb/selecthwys.php?sys=canonf&rg=all&gr=p#r (http://cmap.m-plex.com/hb/selecthwys.php?sys=canonf&rg=all&gr=p#r) instead. Is this okay to use? I've noticed some of the Ontario freeways are a few years outdated.
3) Could someone check if I'm doing my .list file right? I don't want to get too far before realizing I'm doing it wrong.

1) Can't use a '/' in the file name for the *.list files.  The '/' is considered as a folder separator and is not eligible for file names.
2) Try: http://tm.teresco.org/hb/  A lot of the Ontario routes have been updated since the last pushed update on the old CHM project, including the recently opened 407 extension and 412.
3) Looks ok so far.

Welcome aboard.  I have made some quick updates to the "How to" post (http://tm.teresco.org/forum/index.php?topic=5.0) to update the obsolete URLs you mentioned.  You definitely want to use our Highway Browser, since, as you noticed, the one from the CHM project is very out of date now.

Thanks for the responses! The links are working  :). I'm still wondering what do about my username though. Can my username be changed, or should just I create a new name?

A new name for the forums?  You can keep this name.  There is no problem with that.

But I thought the slash would be a problem, since I can't name my file 7/8.list

For your list file, yes, it's a problem.

However, it isn't a problem for your username here in the forums.

There's no combination of the user names from the website and the forum. Keep 7/8 for the forum and any other name for the list file, e.g. 7_8.list or 78.list,...

You could create a file with the / in it, and I don't think there's anything behind the scenes that would stop it from working, but it's probably not worth the trouble to find out if any such assumptions about filenames exist.

And as others have stated, there's no need to force your forum username to match your .list name that will be used in the main site.

Welcome aboard!

Okay, so I have separate names for the forum and the website. That explains my confusion :)

Do I need to setup my username for the website, or do I simply email travmap@teresco.org with a file called 7_8.list, and then that will automatically setup 7_8 as a user with my highway information?

Also, for my list file, I'm assuming I should only include highway systems which are "active" (green)?

Thanks again! I'm done all my Canadian highways, and my Interstates, so I look forward to my first update :)

Yes, just email the list file, making sure it's plain text and not something like RTF or doc.  I'll put it into place and it will get into the next site update.  Site updates typically run once or twice a day.

You can include both active and preview systems, but be aware that the preview systems could change without notice.

You can do Preview systems and they will be mapped (eg my travels on Borneo (http://tm.teresco.org/hb/index.php?r=idn.ah150&u=si404)), but be warned that they can be changed without notice.
