KY: Purchase Pkwy converted to I-69 from Mayfield to I-24
« on: September 03, 2018, 06:29:24 pm »
The Purchase Pkwy has been converted to I-69 from just south of the Mayfield bypass to I-24.  Signage throughout the segment confirms this, but also opens a couple of questions. This post will have a few replies with photos.

The KTC has videos and stills here:

At the rebuilt I-24/69/Purchase Pkwy interchange, the last piece of the parkway from I-24 to US 62 is no longer signed as the Purchase Pkwy. It's just "To US 62" northbound and "To I-24/69" southbound.

On the Mayfield bypass, the signage for US 45 Bypass between Purchase Pkwy and US 45 has been changed to "To US 45 Mayfield". On the US 45 end, new signage only references I-69. There are a couple of old US 45 Bypass trailblazers left up

The south end of I-69 & the north end of the Purchase Pkwy is at the end of the median barrier 3/4 mile south of Exit 21. The Purchase Pkwy only has a few green "Future I-69 Corridor" signs to Fulton.

Thanks for the heads-up and especially for all the documentation. That video is really helpful.

My first thought is to set the transition from Purchase Pkwy to I-69 at the south end of the Mayfield bypass. I'd rather not introduce a new waypoint at the actual END sign location that will not correspond to a point needed on the extended I-69.

Although I'd prefer to keep the stub of former parkway north of I-24 around, since a lot of people have clinched it, I can't think of anything to call it. Does anyone think it's worth contacting KYTC to see if there's a name/internal number for it, with the idea it could be put in usasf? OTOH, it's less than a mile long, so hardly seems worth it.

Same for the stub of US 45 Bypass at Mayfield exit 21. I clinched it today, but it may no longer be US 45 Bypass.

According to KYTC the south end of I-69 is indeed at exit 21. The former north end of the Purchase Parkway is now part of KY 1523.

Thanks. Good to see the Photolog is back up and running. I'll wait to see if 1523 ends up being posted there in the future.

Just wanted to throw this out here for the future, but the '21' point will probably have to be re-centered sooner or later once OSM has been updated since that interchange has been reconfigured and OSM is still showing the old alignment.  You can kinda see the new alignment in the "Esri WorldImagery" layer in the HB.

=====

On a side note, should we match reality with the re-configuration of the I-24/I-69 'south' interchange too?  Mainly since I-69 has dedicated 'slip' ramps and is a 'left' exit a good distance from the original cloverleaf, and since there's already a shaping point practically right where the split happens on I-24.

Is the I-69 designation halted where it is because the rest of the parkway southwest to US 51 isn't interstate-standard? I see there's a PDF that pointed out deficient locations (vs. current standards) but the new end point seems random.

Of course, nothing else about I-69 makes sense so it's par for the course.  :P

@James: all the interstates deserve some closer examination, and I'll realign those interchanges as part of that project in the not-too-distant future.

@Jeff: the next interchange south of Exit 21 still has a substandard ramp configuration developed when it was tolled, which allowed for tolls to be collected for exiting and entering traffic at the same tollbooths. There might be some more upgrading going on, but that interchange is likely the biggest hurdle.
