UT: UT 201 surface segment

(1/1)

US 89:
Utah 201 has a second segment not currently in TM that runs along 2100 South from 900 West to US 89. It is there as a remnant from a previous configuration of the Spaghetti Bowl where the 201 freeway was a direct westward continuation of 21st South. I'm pretty sure this used to be in TM, so I'm assuming it was removed for being unsigned? It did appear UDOT was slowly giving up on that segment of 201, with many references to that segment removed presumably to deter confusion with the freeway part of 201. But I saw this today at the 300 West intersection:

This is new in the past year, so UDOT isn't giving up on that surface segment just yet...

Duke87:
It was removed for being unsigned, yes.

But also because of this teensy little problem that... it's not contiguous with the 201 freeway. It's impossible to actually follow the route thru without missing a piece of it or making a U-turn somewhere.

'Course, now this shows it being signed again (unless I want to play the "street sign blades don't count" card).

If I do add this back in it'll be as a separate route from main 201 to address the discontinuity. But I'm going to sleep on it before I do anything because... bleh, it's edge casey.

We generally don't split at U-turns, even in extreme cases like MD 18. MD 18 westbound at US50 requires a longer backtrack than UT 201 eastbound (U-turning at 1300 South). And 201 westbound does have a direct ramp.

Duke87:
"Westbound has a direct ramp" is kinda fudgy since taking that ramp both leaves the surface alignment before it ends and enters the freeway alignment after it begins.

MD 18 isn't really analagous since while turns there are forced on account of superstreeting, the route does continue on the other side of US 301 at the same point in both directions. UT 201, the west end of the surface alignment and the east end of the freeway alignment are not in the same place. It's a discontinuity both in terms of travelable path and centerline alignment position.

Anyway....
