Title: AL: US 80 goes through downtown Selma
Post by: neroute2 on January 06, 2021, 10:57:24 pm
As with US 41 to Miami Beach, AASHTO and state maps both disagree with signage. The 2019-20 official (https://www.dot.state.al.us/pdf/ALHighwayMapFront.pdf) clearly shows a red line (U.S. Numbered Route per the legend) through downtown and a black line on the bypass. AASHTO has never approved moving US 80 to the bypass.

PS: there are many near miss points in this area. Try clicking from http://travelmapping.net/hb/showroute.php?r=al.us080bussel to other routes.

I support leaving this as is. Regardless of what AASHTO says or what the official state map implies, signage on the ground clearly and consistently has US 80 on the bypass and US 80 Business through town.

So, by the principle of "signage is the final arbiter", the way it is currently in the HB is correct.

I'm a long veteran of traveling through there.  That is why I did the routes as is, and am leaving them as-is.

I'll address the near miss points in another thread.
