Title: Region with most mileage is somewhere you've never lived?
Post by: mapcat on March 26, 2021, 06:26:39 pm
At some point earlier this month, my mileage in Kentucky surpassed my mileage in Ohio. Ohio's always been my top state, as it's been my home for 20 years (and the entire time I've actively kept track of routes travelled). I've never lived in Kentucky. It's about 2 hours away from my home at its closest point.

Who else has more miles in a region you've never lived in than you do in what you consider your home region?

I have more mileage in Texas, where I've never lived, than in California (where I grew up, got my driver's license, and went to college) or Virginia (where I now live).

This includes preview systems. Just for active systems, California is behind Texas, Virginia, 18 other states (two of which I lived in, but only as a little kid), and 5 Canadian provinces.

I have more mileage in North Carolina than either of the 2 states I've lived in since I got my driver's license in 1985 (SC - 8 yrs, VA - 28 yrs).

To be fair, I have all but a few miles of the primary routing there is in Virginia. Don't think if I added secondary mileage in Virginia I would catch North Carolina, where I have also driven a fair amount of secondary routes.

Since some people live in states with small amounts of primary mileage, a better question might be this, which surprises me whenever I think about my own answer:

What is an absurdly small amount of mileage you have in an adjoining state to you?

For me, I only have 883 miles in Kentucky.  This is because it is pretty far one-way from my house to anywhere in Kentucky, which is also never in my path on a longer trip I might take with my wife.  Contrast this with Ohio where I have 2716 miles.

Sure, I figured this would be true for a decent number of people, although (at least) two from Virginia is pretty impressive. Virginia has almost 7000 clinchable miles, which is pretty hard to max out. It seems more likely that this would happen for someone from Maryland or Connecticut.

Is Ontario adjacent to Ohio? That's really the only one left where I don't have a lot of mileage (a little over 2000 out of 7500).

I grew up in South Carolina (in fact, I lived in the Charleston area for about 25 years).  However, I have more mileage in Georgia.  I have lived here in GA since the end of 2011, but its mileage (active and preview systems combined) is 4041.30 miles. SC is only 3458.01.

I have more mileage in Texas than in Alabama (where I've lived for 8 years), but less than Florida (lived for 30 years). I could probably count 4-6 months of my working life in Texas, just never more than two weeks at a time before departing. If Farm/Ranch-to-Market roads were included – seems like a mammoth task and undertaking – it would probably eclipse my Florida mileage totals.

Not many adjacent states are low on mileage; I don't get a lot of work in South Carolina compared to North Carolina and Georgia, which explains a lack of clinched miles. But the same goes for Mississippi and Kentucky; however, they're on the way to other destinations so it's easier to pick up miles there.

I tend to marvel at the overall percentage of Rhode Island mileage I've attained, for only 5-6 visits, mostly as a cheaper flight option to the greater Boston area. Or that nearly every trip to Indiana seems to net me 300-400 new miles a week, which is just the random "work slot machine" at play.

There are already more than 3,000 route files on Github.... They are just not yet visible in HB with devel status.

DELETE! (Thought I had this scenario, I do not)

I'm not even close to this scenario.  New York leads second-place Florida by over 2000 miles and third-place Texas by 500 more.

No where close to this yet for me.  Georgia has been my home since 3rd grade/1985 and combined with my recently completed effort to visit every county courthouse, it's in a huge lead.  My next biggest state is Alabama where I was born and the next courthouse target.  But it's smaller areas and state highway system means it will never pass Georgia.  In fact, as I look, I doubt any of my neighboring states will ever pass Georgia unless y'all add all the lower tier state highways in NC.

As for neighbors, Tennessee is surprisingly small at only 1,066 miles.  I've spent more time going through Tennessee than it being the destination itself might explain it being the lowest mileage of my neighbors.  That and frequent trips to Chattanooga area don't give you many miles just over state line.

Much more interesting is the lowest mileage state on my list of New Jersey at 2.46 miles.  When I went to Philadelphia several years ago, I drove across the Walt Whitman Bridge, turned around and came back just to say I had been to Jersey.  Similar excursion to Delaware, but I actually visited sites in Wilmington that day so I got almost 20 miles!  I'm sure situations like that are very common stories with this group though.

Colorado is by far and away my highest mileage (and where I currently live), but Texas is my number 2 and I've never lived there, while states 3-6 (Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Florida) I've either lived or worked in.

With one neighboring state, 2 neighboring provinces, and no passport, in my case this question translates to "Is your mileage in NH lower than one might expect?" :)
If I have to go there any time I leave, I shouldn't have as much left to color in in the SE corner of the map as I do. There's still quite a bit of low-hanging fruit in terms of NE<->SW corridors near the seacoast, parallel to 95 & 495. When I do leave though, seems I too often get impatient about getting where I'm going & barreling down I-95 like a cat with a tin can tied around its tail (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pazHA-SGmjI).

I only have 672 miles in Nebraska since I haven't really traveled anything other than the interstates and a little bit of mileage in the extreme southeast corner when we went camping at Indian Cave SP.  That's in comparison to 1,895 miles in Wyoming where I've never lived.

My state rank out of 50 for my bordering states:
Kansas (#4)
Wyoming (#8)
New Mexico (#9)
Arizona (#11) (It kinda borders it)
Utah (#12)
Oklahoma (#19)
Nebraska (#30)

Also, I just realized that percentage-wise, my 2nd highest state is one I've never lived in and have only been to 5 times or so (Idaho @ 34%).

Technically, I'm not close, as I have spent most of my life living in New York and that's a good 8,000 miles above second-place Pennsylvania (lived for a year as a toddler) and even further above third-place Ohio (lived for four years). If we want to be strict with "states I have never lived in", my highest mileage in a state goes to the fourth place state, Massachusetts, at 3,035 miles. However, I have not lived in Pennsylvania since I was 2 years old and I am claiming very little mileage in Pennsylvania since that time.

The highest state that I have not lived in, nor a state that borders a state I have lived in, is Virginia (6th place) with 2,501 miles. Highest west of the Mississippi River is Colorado with 1,705 over the course of two trips in 2018 and 2019.

Percentagewise, #2 is DC, which I have only visited, mostly on work trips. Considering only states, #2 is Vermont, which I have lived within 30 miles of for nearly half of my life.

I just realized I have seven states where I have more mileage than my home state of Michigan. I realize Michigan's total mileage is a little less than average compared to other midwestern states, but I didn't think I'd have that many. That said, I tend to view my travels in terms of the percentages, rather than raw miles. I have 5 states (MI, OH, IN, WI, DE) with 100% totals, and one (IL) very close. Biggest surprise to me? I have 58.58% (4409 miles) in Oregon, a state I've only visited 4 times.

It seems more likely that this would happen for someone from Maryland or Connecticut.

🙋

I live in Connecticut and while I have clinched all mileage within it, there are no fewer than 8 regions in which I have more miles.

That said, I didn't have any of this prior to my last move, as New York (where I lived for a while) was and still is my #1 region in terms of raw miles clinched. The most mileage I have anywhere that I've never lived is in Pennsylvania, which is #2 overall currently... however Texas is only about 100 miles behind for active+preview... and if the FMs were live it would be #2. (It was #2 without the FMs prior to this past weekend, but I went and clinched a bunch of roads in PA, so...)

Since some people live in states with small amounts of primary mileage, a better question might be this, which surprises me whenever I think about my own answer:

What is an absurdly small amount of mileage you have in an adjoining state to you?

I mean... only three states adjoin Connecticut. Two of them I have 100% clinched, and the third is the aforementioned New York which I am at 72.92% of. I don't even have a great answer if I broaden "adjoining" to "nearby" as there is no northeastern state I am under 30% in.

But how about we flip this question around: what is an absurdly large amount of mileage you have in a region nowhere near you?

For this I submit the fact that in spite of having always lived in the northeastern US, the two Canadian provinces in which I have the highest percentage of their systems clinched are... Yukon (45.32%) and British Columbia (29.23%). Making it even more fun is that every single inch of road I have clinched in those provinces is all from one trip. I have been to much closer Ontario and Quebec numerous times, but am at a far lower percentage in both (9.87% and 10.36%, respectively).
That said, Quebec is ahead of Yukon for me (but not British Columbia!) in terms of raw mileage.

Finland! I've been there for seven days in 2017 but have 2732 miles :D
It is #6 of my regions.

My regions #1 and #2 are very close with each almost 8,000 miles. Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are the regions where I always lived. Always very, very close to the state border but at different locations.

I'd submit my 1,113 miles in Iceland despite only having been on one trip there.

I already mentioned I have a high percentage (33.9%) in Idaho and I've only been there 5 or 6 times.

I also have 51.84% of the Philippine Expressway System in three visits (but most of that was on one visit)

I have 2153 in Oregon from 3 road trips (also am only missing 5 counties, we planned those road trips well).

Somehow Florida is #3 for me (after NY and PA), even though I've only been there once.  Apparently going down to Key West and then back via a different route (to the extent such is possible/practical) nets a lot of miles.

Every other jurisdiction on my top 10 either is NY, borders NY, or is along/near the Northeast Corridor.

I am not surprised by that.  I have 921 miles, and over a third of them would have just been on I-95 (which I do not even have clinched in FL, I only got it down to I-395/FL 836 because the bus did not go south of there).

As someone who's done the ride between the FL/GA border on I-95 and the Naples area many times, I can confirm that Florida is very tall.  The few times that involved I-10 to/from the AL/FL border seemed even longer.  Not much to see on I-10 out in much of the panhandle.

Excluding states that I or my kids live or have lived in or states adjacent to those states, the only state in my top ten list remaining is Florida. The next state not excluded is California.

My home Florida and neighboring Georgia are my top 2, but Pennsylvania beats Alabama for #3 by a few miles thanks to it being a frequent summer destination and having criss-crossed it many different ways.

Colorado ranks #8 beating nearby South Carolina by about 50 miles due to a generous loop to Montrose -> Durango -> Walsenburg from the Denver Airport and South Carolina mostly being used as a pass-through state to the Appalachians or coastal Mid-Atlantic. I was a passenger in all but a couple trips through SC with the same interstates being backtracked over and over for optimal time. Sometimes drives through the Carolinas and Virginia were skipped entirely by using the Amtrak Auto Train or flying into BWI instead.

I'm a little surprised I have no miles in Mississippi yet despite its relatively friendly proximity.

My top five states for mileage include the three states I've lived in, but they're numbers 1, 2, and 5. That is likely due to New Jersey not having a lotof miles to clinch. NJ is my highest *percentage* region, not counting DC which I consider too small to count for this purpose.

My second-highest percentage region is Maryland, in which I've never lived but lies between VA (where I live) and PA (where I once lived and parents still do), so it makes sense.

My 3 (Alaska), 4 (Oregon), and 5 (Schleswig-Holstein) in percentage travel are areas a long way, over 1500 miles, from where I have ever lived.  Saint Martin is really too small to count the percentage as an anomaly if you visit the island at all.  Considering the amount of time I have spent in some of those regions and the fact that Schleswig-Holstein is on another continent than I have ever lived on, it might be a bit surprising that the percentages are so high.

Well, per percentage... I only lived in regions #6 (85%) and #13 (57%). #1 to #3 have just a little over 100mi, #5 even less. From #4 to #12 I have six French regions where we have not yet drafted D route systems. And Luxembourg is also little with less than 600 miles. The biggest surprise is #16 Portugal with 1268 miles and 42%. I've only been there on one roadtrip and my hotels were in Spain. I never spent a night in Portugal :D

Texas finally overtook Florida in my totals, but that's the way it goes.

It's almost surpassed the total amount of possible state-maintained mileage I could possibly get in Alabama.

Texas is my most miles followed by Louisiana, Florida, Arizona, and then my home state of Mississippi. Mississippi state routes are not fully up much less clinchable yet. Once that happens (someday, hopefully), Mississippi should jump above Texas.
