Title: GA: US-78 rerouted in Thomson
Post by: Presidentman on May 23, 2016, 12:20:19 pm
TM has US 78 bypassing Thomson, GA but it has now been rerouted to go through the downtown. The bypass in now GA 17.

Hmm it's odd that US78 would be rerouted off of the bypass. Any sources? Otherwise it looks like a labeling error on Google Maps.

TM's routing of US 78 in Thomson Confirmed by OSM

FTFY. But OSM sometimes gets it wrong too, even if it's less goofy than Google Maps. So what's the source? Signage in the field (photos would help)? Something official from GDOT?

Map of "SR 17 FROM  THOMSON AT I-20 IN MCDUFFIE COUNTY TO US 1 AT WRENS IN JEFFERSON COUNTY" shows GA17 via bypass.

Which'd mean GA 17 has moved to the bypass from where TM has it. But a quick glance (all I have time for right now) doesn't show US 78 has moved off the bypass. Very common in GA to have concurrent US and state routes.

We have GA17 through Thompson and via the bypass!

(all I have time for right now)

No need to investigate anything immediately. You can do it whenever you want. But it would be nice if you (and all of us) would also check old topics from time to time.

JUly 2016 GMSV shows bypass signed as US 78, GA 10, GA 17 BYP.  Route through town signed as mainline GA 17.  This is my recollection when I drove this bypass in Sept 2017.

I live in Grovetown, just east of Thomson.  I have been on the Thomson Bypass (as it's signed) many times.  It is indeed signed as US 78, GA 10, and GA 17 Bypass.  According to former maps, US 78 (and I think GA 10) traveled through the city, on GA 17.

If I get a chance, I plan to drive the bypass this week to see what it's signed as.

GDOT's McDuffie County map (http://www.dot.ga.gov/DriveSmart/MapsData/Documents/CountyMaps/McDuffie.pdf), dated June 2018, agrees. US 78, GA 10, GA 17 Byp on the bypass; GA 17 through town.

That's exactly like we have it in HB. Marking topic solved.
