VA: VA92 Clover
« on: May 04, 2023, 09:33:14 pm »
Out of curiosity, since I drove through there today. Is VDOT planning to replace the Va 92 bridge over Staunton River? They had detour signs for Va 92 posted along US 360 and in Clover as well.
Figure detour meant the bridge was going to be replaced...soon?

The last update I could find on this was from mapmikey in 2017:  https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=294.msg2237538#msg2237538

I am unsure where the project is right now, but the bridge has been closed since 2007.

The VA 92 replacement bridge over the Staunton River shows up in the revised Virginia 6-year plan...
http://syip.virginiadot.org/Pages/lineitemDetails.aspx?syp_scenario_id=233&line_item_id=1498338
$12M with construction starting in 2022.

I believe that was old US-360 before the relocation was built between Clover and Wylliesburg.

That bridge is old and decrepit.  Doesn't carry much traffic.  Wonder if they are going to keep part of the old truss structure on display.

Yes...was US 360 until the late 1960s.

The traffic count the last year the old bridge was open (2006) was 440.  It was a whopping 490 in 2001.

IMO it borders on a waste of money to rebuild the bridge because it is shorter and faster to reach Clover via US 360 across the river.  However, the Clover Power Station probably has truck traffic that the town of Clover would rather not see as they have to while there is no VA 92 bridge, so that may justify the expenditure....

So I found out today that the replacement VA 92 bridge is now under construction with anticipated completion in 2027 (can be seen on this map).  Information on this project was so hard to find that I ended up asking the contractor that was actually working today while sight clinching what I could in regard to VA 92 there.

This brings up something interesting that might want to be addressed now, then in ~2027 when the route is 'reconnected'.

Both 'segments' of VA-92 have a 'US360' point in them, which would cause issues when merging the routes together.

I would recommend ahead of time, changing the 'US360' in VA92Clo to 'US360_Clo' now, and allow the 8 people to 'update' that label in their files, as I would recommend an intentional break of the file here, as less people have been on this route, than the main VA-92 file.

Actually I think we should have just gone with US360_W here and then US360_E in the main VA 92 file.
