Title: NY: NY 96 in Rochester
Post by: Jim on April 27, 2023, 08:30:13 pm
I drove the northernmost portion of what we have as NY 96 in Rochester today.  I turned on to East Ave. from Union St and took East Ave. south/eastbound.  I did not see any indication that I was on NY 96 until the mess where it crosses through the I-490/I-590/NY 590 ramps.

Like many routes through cities in NY, signage for NY 96 mostly disappears once NYSDOT jurisdiction ends.  That said, signage on Winton Road (https://www.google.com/maps/@43.1450861,-77.5554551,3a,17.2y,37.44h,87.23t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1scMAANNpih00HBSprIufpHw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DcMAANNpih00HBSprIufpHw%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D236.49934%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192) shows that it does indeed continue into the city, even if official sources are needed to know exactly where.

ISTR this had a topic in the past, though I won't attempt to look one up ATM. I do remember examining this endpoint, throwing up my hands, and going no-build.

Re-examining the sources:
TDR & shapefiles show Main St.
Tour Book lists Inner Loop.

Of these 2 options, the no-build option (UniSt, formerly the Inner Loop) is closer to where signage disappears.

FWIW, I did not photograph any NY 96 shields when I clinched the Inner Loop in August 2022.
