Title: NC: point requests, point changes, US70Bus Beaufort
Post by: vespertine on October 21, 2019, 05:31:28 pm
Couple of things from North Carolina...first, even though GMSV shows signs there, and the route was less than 2 years old, US70Bus in Beaufort is no longer signed, per field check this October. Nothing on US70 proper, and I travelled from the east end to NC101. Nothing. BTW, NC101 still ends at the same spot, no changes there.

Also a couple of point changes and/or requests:

* For NC53: GumSprRd -> GumBraRd

* Also, A point for Gum Branch Rd would be handy on US17BusJac.

* NC172: points for the Camp Lejeune gates, or the nearest road to the gate seems needed. I drove the northern section of NC172 to Bear Creek Rd right near the gate. And also, how did 4 people clinch a route that's half under military jurisdiction? Is there a way for civilians to travel it I don't know about?

* And a minor nitpick: on NC73, wouldn't it make more sense for nearby Beatties Ford Rd to be a point instead of Henry Ln (HenLn)? Granted it's only like 500 feet away, so no biggie, but Beatties Ford goes to I-485; Henry Ln just dead ends.

N.C. 172 used to be open to through traffic prior to 9/11.
I drove the entire thing in 1990.

Interesting about 70 business... had it been approved by AASHTO.?

I have made the changes suggested but not yet done anything with US 70 business...waiting to see if that is just temporary

mapmikey, I caught in the commit on Github that the NC 53 edit was accidentally put in for NC 58. I indicated to Jim already about fixing it. Relevant comments on Github can be accessed at the below link.

Thanks for catching my error while it was still easy to correct...

You're welcome.  It definitely averted possibly quite a few threads and broken list files over the issue.

I ended up looking at NC 53 and NC 24 around Jacksonville and see further changes that should be made.

NC 53
1.  GumBraRd should be recentered slightly.
2.   +x110 should be replaced with a visible point at Carolina Forest Blvd (CarForBlvd) (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.8002182,-77.4172158,3a,15y,337.95h,88.03t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sjqi6xlPtEq-itkBUgu96vA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).
3.  Points should be added at Jacksonville Pkwy (JacPkwy-connects to US 17 SB (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7914721,-77.4064275,3a,75y,165.06h,99.83t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sL9-eiWfuceQWeuNuw3kTEA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)), Huff Dr (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7607017,-77.382423,3a,75y,178.92h,102.42t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sHydcT_qnczZDPrQ1unuCcg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) (connects to US 17 bypass), and Wilson Blvd (WilBlvd) (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7448393,-77.392764,3a,75y,151.61h,93.16t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sDYvQiA3beP3_o-mw2daKsQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) (the latter also should be added to NC 24).

NC 24:
1.  See number 3 for NC 53.
2.  I would change TarBlvd (Tarawa Blvd) to Corbin St (CorSt) (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7413484,-77.3626358,3a,37.5y,286.01h,94.83t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1spw27RLi7CFFHqR-8lKoaww!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).  Tarawa Blvd seems to go to a private community.
3.  A point should be added for the interchange at the main gate for Camp Lejeune (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7275509,-77.3433421,3a,75y,326.68h,87.66t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1swTsn1vJkhpdloy3jpmZ_hg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).
4.  I would replace HunTrl with a point at nearby Piney Green Rd (PinGreRd) (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7276897,-77.320764,3a,75y,289.15h,83.15t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1soJYHZ587UyyikpzmphT3Vw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).
5.  I would make KelRd a hidden shaping point as the road seems to dead end unless it is in-use.  These revisions seem to add more than enough visible points anyhow.

When I looked into the US 70 BUS (Beaumont) issue briefly yesterday, I did not see anything on the NCDOT Route Changes page (https://connect.ncdot.gov/resources/safety/Lists/Proposed%20Changes/AllItems.aspx) that proved to me it should have ever existed.

I think an email to NCDOT may have to be done on this one.

I wouldn't put too much credence into whether something shows up in the route changes pages.  Lots of stuff is missing...for example, the NC 125 extension to the Bob Martin Ag Center on Prison Camp Rd in the mid 1990s is still not in there...

I have contacted NCDOT Division 2 this evening to ask about US 70 Business.  We'll see what kind of response I get.

Meanwhile the NC 24 and NC 53 changes are in the queue...

I have received a response from NCDOT about what happened with US 70 Business in Beaufort:

Quote
The posting was signed under the project after the US 70 Bypass was open. We changed it to Secondary Number Route so in the future it can be turned over to the Town of Beaufort to be maintained as city street. We have to turn it into SR Numbers as we can not turn US or NC Routes over to a city.

So the route was real but in the end brief.  I will remove it from TM at my next set of updates...
