TN: I-69 in Memphis
« on: June 22, 2016, 08:19:11 am »
Shown as an official interstate on the FHWA along I-55, I-240, I-40.  However, no signage in the field (except a few 'Future Corridor' signs).

We have it on the site as a 'Future Interstate'.  However, do you guys think we should convert it to a full Interstate and just consider it as an 'Unsigned Interstate'?  If I remember correctly, the only part of that file that wasn't approved is the 'TN-300' part at the Northern end, and only that would stay as a Future Interstate.

I think we should be consistent, which means include it like all unsigned interstates.

That Route Log update seems very sloppy of FHWA, given other entries on it that haven't even come close to paperwork and issuance (like I-685 AL).  I'd be hesitant to take it as gospel.

Well, with I-69 in Memphis at least, they did get approval from the AASHTO and the FHWA for this.  TDOT just seems to be lazy and doesn't want to post any signage.

So, I think, at least with I-69 between MS and TN-300, should be converted to a full Interstate, and be considered as a 'hidden'.  The section between I-40 to US-51 (along hidden TN-300) should stay as a "Future Interstate".  Comments?

Ok, I've made the changes that I outlined above.  Promoted I-69 to full (hidden) Interstate status between Mississippi and TN-300's interchange with I-40.  Keeping the part that's along TN-300 as 'future' as wasn't part of the FHWA approval for posting.

Does anybody see anything wrong with the pull request?

I would object unless/until we have some sort of documentation from TDOT that they acknowledge I-69 exists.

Would this email that I got back in response to I-69 signage in March 2011 count?  This was from a Steve Chipman in TDOT.

Quote
James,

I apologize for the delay.  You ask a very good question.  The reason why we have not signed I-69 along existing routes, I-55/I-240/I-40, is because it would be a big project to undertake at this time with the existing economic conditions as they are today.  We do not see a benefit in signing existing routes until more of I-69 is completed.  It would require modifying overhead and ground mount signs, added cost for surveying/establishing locations, developing a plan, and securing funding.  Your suggestion to post an "End I-69" sign at the state line might have merit.  I will past this on for consideration and to see if it is possible.

Not really, unless they actually posted the END I-69 sign.  Given past precedent, we should be looking for one of the following:  A) on an official map, B) signage, or C) in a route log.

I drove the piece of Future I-69 up to US 51 when I drove through Memphis back in September, and I saw no I-69 references whatsoever.  I would have no problem if mapcat moved this right into the solved pile.

No. Try again next year (maybe by then there might be something up around Union City).
