Shields on topstats
« on: February 06, 2021, 11:17:47 am »
I'd like to get a little feedback on an implementation of topstats that includes shields.  As of now, all routes also have text, not just those that need it to differentiate sections.  For chopped routes, I think it's needed anyway so we know what region a route is in, and I kind of like the consistency of a shield and some text for every route.

It's on tmstage now:

https://tmstage.teresco.org/user/topstats.php?units=miles&u=terescoj&

I think it's fairly straightforward and can be put onto the production server soon unless there are objections or problems noted that are not easy to fix.

It is an improvement!

Long text looks odd though, e.g. WAW on my list.

I'd still miss system names most on topstats. Shields help a little bit but not much.

With the higher rows we might reduce the maximum number of entries per table to 15 or êven 10.

I'm not sure what to do about really long names like that.  I don't want to wrap to multiple lines to keep the table row sizes consistent.  I don't want to truncate the text because if it's there, someone thought it was necessary to distinguish the route.  I'm open to suggestions.

How about hover text with all of the details of the route?

I've got this initial version live on the main site.

How about hover text with all of the details of the route?

The route name is currently indicated on the shield and again below. Check my top stats: E35 - E35, 7 - A7, 3 - A7, E41 - 41, A14 - A14 (Autostrada Adriatica) etc.
If we have the generic shield only, it is e.g. SVN R229 - R229, ENG A4510 - A4510, IRL R874 - R874.
Mostly, the shield provides even more info than the text below if there is only one route.

I'd omit the route name and only show the "groupName" e.g. E70 shield + "(Spain - Bulgaria)" text instead of E70 shield + "E70 (Spain - Bulgaria)".
The full info (route name + banner + groupName + system name) could be shown as hover text - or in an optional(?) column?

What about banners in general? Do we need them on the tables or is it fine to "hide" them in hover text? I guess that they mainly appear on the "closest to clinch" table.

This looks useful.

The issue with the WAW is that I spell out Wild Atlantic Way in all the groupNames - I can drop that as WAW is not too hard to decode. But is the \/\/\/\/ symbol (WW with the join meant to be A without a crossbar) obviously Wild Atlantic Way for those that didn't deliberately travel it (and so aren't very acquainted with the symbol) when we get the shields in?

(the mainline has (S) and (N) for what direction you were travelling in - I was thinking (S) on the southern 'Tralee' section, (N) on the northern 'Galway' section even though both bits have both directions. Just to separate it from the 100-odd branches that have no direction on shields)

Agree with both. Drop the name and the shield might be added: https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/617

The full name also looks odd in HB where it is displayed twice right now:

These tables look great. Thanks for putting in the work, especially all the new shields.

I agree that repeating the route name under the shield is unimportant. Personally I think using hover for all info (route name, group name, banner) would make it look cleaner.

Some additional suggestions:
  • Option for displaying stats by tier
  • Another column for shortest routes clinched (didn't CHM have this?)
  • Overall stats for disconnected connected routes (e.g. I-35, US 20)
More of a general comment, not solely for topstats: how difficult would it be to limit the list of systems and regions to those in which the user has travelled?

As has been mentioned before, eventually it would be wonderful to be able to have stats by country (for countries with subregions) and continent, here and elsewhere.

Regarding the shields, seeing a list of all the routes in usasf and usanp I've clinched reminded me that the current generic shields for these are less than ideal. Could these be changed to a larger rectangle with the full name of the route spelled out instead of the abbreviation (i.e., pull "city" instead of "route" from the file)? I guess the way we have the usanp files set up, some of these would include park names and therefore be obnoxiously long, but for usasf, usakyp, and usanyp IMO this would be better than the current substitute, at least until actual shields are created for the roads that have them.

Also, just noticed a bug that seems to apply to all users who have clinched the NJ Turnpike: in the middle column, travelled miles > length, and the background color is not the normal "clinched" blue.

I've not been able to reproduce this one.  Anyone else seeing this?

Thanks for all of the suggestions.  I want to make sure these don't get lost, so I'll point to existing or new Issues about these.  Some are specific to topstats and some will apply anywhere we use the shields.

I agree that repeating the route name under the shield is unimportant. Personally I think using hover for all info (route name, group name, banner) would make it look cleaner.

I'm thinking that we'd want a non-empty city field shown all the time (like it is on clinched.php), and a banner added above to distinguish those (https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/618).  Other info could be in hover.

Option for displaying stats by tier

I've kind of downplayed the idea of the tiers on the user point of view.  Maybe others think differently, but I don't care of a route is a tier 2 or a tier 3, as they seem pretty arbitrarily assigned as CHM and then TM expanded highway coverage.

Another column for shortest routes clinched (didn't CHM have this?)

Sounds like fun.  https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/619

Quote
Overall stats for disconnected connected routes (e.g. I-35, US 20)

This gets back to the problem we discussed a lot last summer about "related routes".  TM data has no way to say that the 3 I-35's and 2 US 20's are the same route in some meaningful way, but pairs like the pairs of I-84, I-86, I-87, I-88, are not.

Yes, a definite longstanding item: https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/54

With some having fairly long names I'm not sure how we could this to work generally.  At the moment, the svg files for the shields are resized to fit into the various places they are used.  For usanp, maybe the NPS shield would help?  https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/621
