Title: RI: I-195 Exit Number Conversion
Post by: Markkos1992 on February 14, 2020, 07:01:48 pm
According to the linked post below from AARoads, the conversion to mileage-based numbers on I-195 in RI is almost complete.

Exit Numbers can be seen here: http://www.dot.ri.gov/projects/exitnumbers/index.php

Oh boy. Love how exits 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D serve different interchanges in different directions, and Gano St is 1A eastbound & 1D westbound. Not.
Welcome to Alanland. This won't be confusing at all. :P

Existing waypoint "4" serves old Exits 4 & 5, signed as 1B/C & 1D. Label "1C" is needed at the westbound-only old Exit 2. "1B" would suggest this point on US6 becomes "I-195(1B)", but that's in use as an AltLabel elsewhere. We're left with 1D, thus old Exit 3 becomes new 1A.

2 (in use) -> 1C
3 -> 1A
4 -> 1D
6 -> 2 (in use)
7 -> 2B
8 -> 2C

The following lists will be broken due to exit 2 moving:
afarina
Ib3kii
justjake
njroadhorse
gman2337
Other travelers have the right portions of the right concurrent routes marked so as not to have a problem.

Maybe check how many people are using the 'altlabel' and see if it's justifiable to break a list or two.  Heck, maybe PM them ahead of time to update their files if they're on the forums or AARoads.

Only two, both active on the forum I think.

afarina.list:RI US6 I-95(22) I-195(1B)
bhemphill.list:RI US6 I-95(22) I-195(1B)

But I don't think there's any real advantage to using "1B" over "1D". We'd trade a label that could be confused for the Gano St exit with a label that could be confused for the Eddy St exit. By using 1D, we avoid breaking any lists.
RIDOT really handed us a steaming little pile with that one. They shoulda gone with 1A/B/C/D/E/F/G IMO.

...Which makes me have 2nd thoughts. Edit pending...
<rant>
We have 2 different exit numbering schemes what traveling opposite directions. Crap like another Exit 4 in York was part of the reason Maine switched to mileage-based in the first place! RIDOT, yr doin it wrong!

The new exit numbers for I-195; RI 10; and RI 37 have been posted to the RI DOT site.
http://www.dot.ri.gov/projects/exitnumbers/index.php

The I-195 renumbering begins on 12/2/19.

Unlike the current fudging and "exceptions for short distance roads" in Massachusetts, RI is going into the alphabet soup.

And they go the Caltrans shite way of not skipping letters for partial interchanges. So Gano Street is 1A eastbound but 1D westbound.
We want to address this in the MUTCD, but obviously that won't be until the next edition.
What if the public starts roaring about how this makes no goddamn sense & they keep getting lost, how their exit numbers send them to the wrong place?
What if in the future RIDOT pulls its head out of its hoop, and renumbers the eastbound exits to something sensible?
If that were to happen, the "1D" label at Gano St would be more future-proof.

Whatever happens, afarina.list will need to change anyway, because Exit 2. I'll send Sent bhemphill a PM.

The scheme (above (http://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=3529.msg17916#msg17916)) with 1D at Taunton Ave is less future-proof because 1D could come into use n a list file before a potential move to Gano St.
In any case, I got a reply from bhemphill, who changed his .list to no longer use the I-195(1B) AltLabel, so we're good to go with the better plan.
I'll redo my changes with the latest pointsinuse info, just to make sure nothing's changed in the meantime.

Meanwhile, the AARoads topic in the OP has some updated info on RI10 & RI37 signage, so I'll be adding in what changes I can there too.
