Title: SC: I-585 'northern' end
Post by: rickmastfan67 on February 25, 2021, 02:01:26 am
I think we can officially extend I-585 up to the intersection with 'Upper Valley Falls Road' based on this mainline shield (https://goo.gl/maps/MgxaWM468rZtZmaN6).  US-176 already has a point at this intersection.

Also on Valley Falls Road, it shows I-585 going North from there. https://goo.gl/maps/i3URFBhDWtggTJLJ6

Still doubt it officially gets to I-85 still, but we can at least get it closer.

Question though.  Isn't the precedent to mark all interstates even if unsigned?  Why wouldn't we connect it to 85?

SCDOT maps and traffic data still have it ending at I-85 Bus as best I can tell.  Could be wrong, but don't recall seeing any SC requests to extend it either.

Back in the 80s there were I-585 shields northbound starting at US 29.  Some later got changed to SPUR signs (still red and blue shield though).

It is posted from the ramps at I-85 in both directions (SB (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.9979738,-81.992912,3a,75y,249.15h,91.24t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sgr6aZ302LY4sPGqgNhfgDQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656) and NB (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.9971403,-81.9915632,3a,75y,85.86h,72.36t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sA-G3yWLHRxICsaSTAzrhAw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656)).

However, the overheads on I-85 say "TO I-585" (https://www.google.com/maps/@35.0010689,-81.988666,3a,75y,249.5h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWEJvh8QgTMgnYFL5ML0XXg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).

I think you could justifably extend it to I-85.  However, you could argue that I should extend PA 418 to US 62 BUS (Sharon) if we do extend it. (https://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=3020.msg14625#msg14625)

However, it's posted solely as US-176 just 'east' of I-85 between it & Upper Valley Falls Road.

Question though.  Isn't the precedent to mark all interstates even if unsigned?  Why wouldn't we connect it to 85?

Is there an official source (not a roadgeek website) anywhere that indicates 585 makes it all the way to 85?

Counter-argument: signage from mainline 85 has "US 176 TO I-585" in both (https://goo.gl/maps/e9P7ZA6RofC5pp5y7) directions (https://goo.gl/maps/WkqoQcXg1FFNe6mg7).

Here's a link (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=28630.msg2576795#msg2576795) to a bit of discussion recently had over on the AARoads forum on this topic.

So basically we know these things:

1) On I-85, the signage reads "To"
2) But, upon exiting I-85, there are shields without "To"
3) Then there is one solitary standalone US176 sign southbound
4) The SC Log file says the highway ends .18 miles north of BL85
5) But, signs continue (northbound) for about .64 miles past that point
6) The distance between the signs at Item 2 and Item 5 is about .36 miles
7) The distance of Actually Signed vs. Official (Item 5) is greater than the distance "Unsigned" (Item 6).
8 ) There is also MM1 one mile south of the I-85 interchange, meaning it's being marked from I-85

To me, that says just label the whole thing.  I think if Item 3 didn't exist, we wouldn't even be asking the question.  One "forgotten" I-585 sign doesn't negate the other info for me.

FHWA GIS data (https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/nhs_maps/) and their online viewer (https://hepgis.fhwa.dot.gov/fhwagis/) both show I-585 making it to I-85 as a part of the IHS. Include, since signage doesn't matter here.

This contradicts their own 2018 route log (https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/interstate_highway_system/routefinder/table02.cfm)

I have e-mailed the listed contact for their maps to see if this can be definitively resolved...

All signage described above including mile markers become I-585's instead of US 176's (oddly the exits are still US 176 mileage) goes back at least 10 years.

Compare 2014 (https://web.archive.org/web/20141029133030/http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/nhs_maps/south_carolina/spartanburg_sc.pdf) and 2020 (https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/national_highway_system/nhs_maps/south_carolina/spartanburg_sc.pdf). The 2018 log is out of date, but only by a few years in this case. I seem to remember other similar out-of-date entries.

Just curious "how we're landing" on this?

I got an immediate human response on 2/26 to my e-mail to FHWA saying he would take a look into it.

Have not heard further...been only a couple business days

Breaking news on I-585.  It has NOT been extended past I-85 Bus.  I forgot who I emailed.  It was FHWA, not SCDOT.

Quote
After some research, we can confirm that I-585 still terminates at I-85 Bus, and has not been extended to the relocated I-85.  I have revised the hepgis map to show the correct I-585 termination.  Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

i verified the map was indeed changed.

Stupid me, I forgot that technically we would in theory need to truncate I-585 to I-85BL....so I think that this thread was not actually solved.
