CA: US 395 relocation west of Death Valley
« on: November 19, 2024, 10:55:25 pm »
Caltrans is relocating US 395 to a new four-lane divided highway west of Death Valley, bypassing about a dozen miles of the undivided old alignment through Olancha and Cartago. Work on the project is still in progress. But US 395 southbound through traffic has already been moved to the new alignment, and northbound through traffic will be shifted tomorrow (postponed a day, to complete striping work).

Later phases of the project will extend CA 190 from its current west end in Olancha to the new US 395 alignment. Westbound CA 190 traffic has been temporarily detoured to the new US 395 alignment, via part of the old 395 alignment north of Olancha, and Crystal Geyser Rd. The permanent 190 extension apparently will instead follow old 395 south of Olancha, and a new road still under construction when I was there last month (indicated by a partially-covered CA 190 route marker on the new 395 alignment). Also, at least part of the old 395 alignment may become Business US 395, but I saw no business route signage.
