PA: PA 66/US 422/PA 28 Interchange near Kittanning
« on: October 08, 2018, 05:55:07 pm »
Note that I am basing my recommendation here on the following topic: (US 222/US 422/PA 12 Interchange in Reading)
http://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=2679.0

Basically, my plan is to have a single point for all three routes on US 422/PA 28 between both sets of ramps.

Labels:
US 422/PA 28: PA66_S
PA 66: US 422/28

All in-use labels will be alternate labels.

The Reading case struck me as more of a single interchange; I see this as looking a bit more like two (an interchange undergoing mitosis?), a bit of a double-trumpet variant. My initial impression is that two points on US422 / PA28 are justified. PA66 is where things start to look a bit oogy. Following the northbound route, as the HB does now, avoids marking a small bit of 422/28 as a false-positive for those who've traveled 422/28 but not 66 NB, or vice versa.
Of course, if we just consider this all to be within the footprint of a single interchange, then that's a non-issue.

OTOH, there's Kansas Turnpike Exit 224, where I-70, US24, US40, US73, and KS7  all come together. A while back, this interchange was reconfigured: 3/4 of a new trumpet was built, connecting to I-70 west of KS7 whereas the old trumpet connected to the east, and connecting to KS7 south of I-70 whereas the old access road connected to the north. The westbound onramp stayed where it was. Thus for simplicity's sake, I declared this to be an oddball parclo variant, and used One Point Per Interchange where the centerlines cross. Voila!
US24 & US40 each lost one waypoint in the transaction: They used to have one point at KS7_S, and then tollow the access road to the trumpet at I-70(224KT).

I guess I don't have a strong opinion either way here?

Yeah I am considering this as a single odd-ball interchange due to the PA 66 movements.  I did move the central point to the centerlines of US 422/PA 28 and PA 66 as mentioned in the Reading thread.

In other news, I also lined up  I-279 and I-579 with PA 28 by putting the point in the most central location possible.  (though it is fully north of PA 28's official routing there)

Sounds fine. This keeps with the "in the middle of the central ramp triangle" guideline, and we'd gain a graph connection here, I assume. See also: NH I-93 5A.

I think we had this setup due to the way the interchange functioned before the US-422 bypass was completed.  The freeway used to end @ Exit B.

Neato... So PA66 woulda been the thru movement, via Main St, and US422 & PA28 would have gone east to the trumpet, then doubled back at a sharp angle, to go north on Main St along with PA28. HistoricAerials shows the bypass complete (with cars on it) by 2004, before CHM & the US routes got off the ground.
If one were drafting such an incomplete route from scratch... well, there'd be multiple options available. :)

Marking as solved minus a true objection.  I probably would have gone for a single point either way in preparation for the future here back then though I do not know for sure as I was not even a teenager in 2004.

Yep!  The hill on the 'current' Business route was a pain, as it had no truck lanes going uphill.  So glad the bypass was finally finished eliminating the need to go downhill, and then back uphill in that area.

^^ Switchback / shaping point?
Although, we didn't have those the first couple years of CHM either! ;)
