VA/MD: US 301 New Nice Bridge
« on: July 26, 2022, 12:06:40 pm »
The new bridge includes a realignment on both sides of the river.  It is currently planned to open in early 2023.

Apparently it will be open by Thursday.  I really want to slap myself for having a damaged car at the moment.   :pan:

(Though I did find out soon after that it is tentatively scheduled to be in the shop next week, so that is good.  I expect to drive the new bridge around Thanksgiving though it may be next weekend.)

I still cannot believe that it is already open (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=8293.msg2777457#msg2777457).

I got several notices on social media and one by email this week about the new Nice/Middleton Bridge opening. With luck I'll be able to drive it the first week of November.

In terms of TM, all this is really going to do is slightly tweak the VA/MD point on US 301.

I believe that SOP in this situation is to also include closed points at both ends of the new alignment (see I-87 at the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge).

SOP is up to interpretation.  I would classify this as a minor reroute.

We've had other minor reroutes that were bigger (i.e. farther away from original alignment) than this one.  It's MAYBE 150 feet.

It looks like the VA/MD waypoiint actually needs more recentering than it does moving due to the new bridge. On account of the state line being at the VA shore of the river, the two bridges are much closer together there.

Anyway I'm good with including the closed points in case anyone wants to mark it as a declinch (I won't, but why take the option away from those who want to?)

Since the bridge is majority in MD and that's my state I'm gonna go ahead and take care of this.

EDIT: https://github.com/TravelMapping/HighwayData/pull/6072

I'd @mapmikey in the git comment but he doesn't appear to have an account.
