Title: NC: US 74 Monroe Bypass
Post by: dfilpus on November 27, 2018, 02:26:11 pm
The bypass opened today. It is signed US 74 Bypass. US 74 through town is still the mainline.

WHAT? It's not a 3DI?

FIFY.  :P

I imagine the request for future 2di status will come in Spring. NC doesn't normally ask for interstate designations before at least some interstate-grade road is open (even if it doesn't yet connect to anything else).

The bypass is a toll road. It would take some doing to get a new toll road designated as an Interstate. I'm surprised that AASHTO okay'ed it as a tolled Bypass US highway.

Actually, not a whole lot of doing.  Just NCDOT requesting inclusion into the system from FHWA and a route number from AASHTO.  Federal law allows new toll roads to be added to the Interstate system, as long as they're built to Interstate standards, connect to an existing Interstate on at least one end, and have a logical termini on the other.

Irrelevant to NCDOT, who were happy with a toll US Highway (and AASHTO surprisingly were too).

Don't be surprised to see them request some form of interstate designation in the Spring meeting. And if it is a 3di and approved, then expect a 2di request in the future.

A tolled US74Byp with vanilla US74 as a free alternate is way better than a tolled US412 with US64 as its free alternate in Oklahoma.

AASHTO policy on U.S. routes is supportive of toll US routes as long as there is a free alternative.  This, however, does not apply to tolled bridges or tunnels.
