Title: I-5S in Glendale, CA
Post by: pderocco on February 06, 2024, 02:38:18 am
This thread https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=34480.0 (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=34480.0) discusses a short state-maintained spur off I-5 in Glendale, CA. The state internally calls it I-5S, it shows up in Google as Colorado Street Freeway Extension, and it has freeway entrance signs for I-5 at Colorado. Shouldn't this be in TravelMapping under some sort of designation? It even has an interchange half way along its length, and an extra little exit onto Elk Ave.

I'm aware of that, and indeed participated in that AARoads thread.

I'm busy with other stuff this week, but once I've dealt with the impending CA 58 reroute in Bakersfield (hope the bad weather doesn't interfere) I'll try to address this. I'm leaning to adding the Colorado Street extension somehow, not sure it should be added to usai as we did with the separate route 5S in Newhall (added as I-5 Truck).

Forgot about this -- just a reminder that I need to take care of this when I return from a short road trip.

Is this still open @oscar?

Yes. I still think it should be added to TM in some form, but not sure about adding it to to usai. The state maintains the freeway and logs it as "route 5S", but like many other Interstate routes Caltrans doesn't internally designate it as an Interstate route. There is no Interstate signage for the route on the I-5 mainline, the only I-5 sign on the spur is an unbannered sign on a "freeway entrance" sign assembly at 5S's east end.

I suggest adding it to usasf as a named Colorado Street freeway (or Colorado Freeway), sidestepping the iffy Interstate signage.

Anyone want to weigh in?

Better usasf than usai IMO.

Looks to me like usasf or not in at all.  Definitely not usai.

I'm trying to belatedly add Colorado Freeway to usasf. But I can't figure out to call up the usasf csv files in GitHub, so I can edit them to add the new route file via pull requests. GitHub's HighwayData/hwy_data/_systems/ directory is truncated to 1000 files, which stops well short of the usasf csvs.

I got it by manually changing the last bit of the url from a different .csv.

https://github.com/TravelMapping/HighwayData/blob/master/hwy_data/_systems/usasf.csv
https://github.com/TravelMapping/HighwayData/blob/master/hwy_data/_systems/usasf_con.csv

Yes it's annoying!
