Title: AL: Suggested Waypoint on US 231/431 North of Huntsville
Post by: mikeandkristie on August 19, 2024, 12:28:15 am
I would like to suggest a waypoint on US 231 / US 431 heading north from Huntsville.  It's something I noticed while planning our return trip to try and finish the US Space & Rocket Center.  AL 255 is a freeway heading north from I-565.  The designation ends as it transitions down from four lanes to a two lane road called Bob Wade Ln.  I think there should be a waypoint at the light where it reaches 231 and 431 since this is a continuous flow of driving.  I'm going to try and do this little loop while we're there over Labor Day and wanted to get an accurate point.

Bob Wade Lane is the de facto continuation past SR 255's norther terminus, so I'd agree.

Maybe one day in the future, it will part of the so-called Northern Bypass.

According to this Huntsville project page (https://www.huntsvilleal.gov/roadworkprojects/northern-bypass-pulaski-pike-us-hwy-231431/) plus recent Google satellite imagery (https://www.google.com/maps/@34.8287185,-86.5946045,3323m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu), the extension of the northern bypass to 231/431 is underway.  However, as shown on both the project page and aerial imagery, it won't actually cross 231/431 at Bob Wade Ln but instead a bit to the south.  The design suggests that Bob Wade will become a "minor footnote" once construction is complete (late 2026 if I read the website correctly).  For this reason, I am hesitant to put a point there.

You could always just put a point at the 'current' intersection, and when the new road opens (and if it gets the AL-255 designation), just hide it as an alt label at the new intersection if you're that worried.
