Title: ME: US 202 Truncated?
Post by: vdeane on June 21, 2025, 09:09:25 pm
Here's an interesting one.  I happened to notice that US 202 is now signed as ending at I-395.  The signage is new, possibly installed when they were moving ME 9 for the connector.  I-395 also no longer sings US 202 at exit 3.  In fact, the only sign that I could see for US 202 north of I-395 that's still there is this one (https://www.google.com/maps/@44.8014027,-68.7745433,3a,27.3y,100.27h,84.42t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sNvZz2L_RGjtY30MrYjzKQA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D5.575928406609634%26panoid%3DNvZz2L_RGjtY30MrYjzKQA%26yaw%3D100.26970445668147!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDYxNy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D).  I wonder what this means for ME 100, since it ended at US 202 and now it just ends in an overlap for no reason.

This sucks for me personally since I went to a great deal of effort to clean up my Maine travels and get the map looking nice with all the US route clinches ending in logical places.  I guess I shouldn't have tried to clinch US 202, since I don't expect to have a chance to deal with that dangling end of US 2 until I'd finish US 2 as part of a trip to clinch the north end of US 1, which would be waiting on the next segment of the Presque Isle Bypass (and maybe even longer, if they decide they're going to finish it - that area is far enough away that I want it to be "once and done").

US202 has ended at I-395 on paper for decades; Cameron Kaiser puts the truncation somewhere between 1986 and 1989 (https://www.floodgap.com/roadgap/me/r?202).
When I was a new roadgeek, there was still signage at US2 if not elsewhere on Main St, but that's slowly been disappearing.
While the old overhead signage on 395 was arguably enough IMO to justify continuing US202 to its parent, the new signage you linked (https://nysroads.com/photos.php?route=i395&state=ME) from the 395/9 connector (https://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=4602.msg38507#msg38507) topic, along with the END sign especially, clinches it (pardon the pun).

I'll submit this along with the 9 relocation in a couple days, saving some time to get up there & drive it for myself, even if this is all perfectly straightforward.

I bet it will stay the same. Old habits die hahd up heah.
Routes ending in at an unnumbered road while on a useless multiplex aren't unheard of.
ME111 ending at Main St in Biddeford while concurrent with ME9 immediately comes to mind.
There's also the E end of ME154.
May be worth checking out ME100 in the field just for due diligence's sake.

Downtown Portland comes to mind too...

26 & 100 end at major unnumbered roads, but I'm not counting those as they're not concurrent with something else at that point.

Edit: Another one, Right in Brewer: ME178 ends at State St while concurrent with ME9Bus.
