NY: I-86 near I-84
« on: May 21, 2022, 08:02:26 pm »
Do any of the uncovered signs and mile markers showing I-86 west of I-84 justify a conversion of part of that route from Future I-86 to I-86 in TM?

See my pictures from a ride last month on this page.

I think that vdeane and cl94 would have posted about it by now if they thought so.  I remember seeing I-86 shields when clinching I-84 west of I-87 in 2016.

Those shields went up over a decade ago and have generally been covered, but in many cases the cover fell off the sign. I'm going to assume "the cover fell off" given the lack of an announcement or AASHTO application. This is different from the I-81 concurrency in that I-81 was just a matter of slapping a second Interstate designation on an existing Interstate.

There are a few other places along 17 with covered I-86 shields, most notably Tioga and Sullivan Counties. I don't expect any movement in Orange/Sullivan until the upcoming reconstruction project is complete.

With no AASHTO/FHWA approval, I'm going with no.

But yes it is kind of comical how little effort is being expended concealing the "future" designation of that section. Really is almost as if NYSDOT is like "we're going to put up a bunch of I-86 signs and cover them up, it'd be a shame if the covers happened to disappear".
