NY: NY 17 by Hillburn and its concurrencies with I-87 and I-287
« on: September 30, 2016, 06:41:03 pm »
So I had always presumed (since I clinched this part of I-87/NYST back in 2009) based on signage that NY 17 had a concurrency with I-87/NYST from I-287 to NY 59 (Exits 15-15A).  However, I have just noticed that it is shaped as going around Hillburn before NY 17 SB goes onto I-287 SB to head into NJ.

NY 17 SB signed as going onto I-87/NYST at Exit 15A

From the road that NY 17 may or may not take to go around Hillburn (this is still at Exit 15A this road is signed as "TO NY 17" from its intersection with NY 59)

At what may be or have been the NY 17/NY 59 intersection: Looking at NY 59 EB,
Looking from NY 59 WB,
Looking from what may be NY 17 NB

Also both directions are posted on I-87/NYST (SB, NB)

I am unsure if this affects the NY 59 file.  I hope the many GSV links are not confusing.

The 2011 NYSDOT Traffic Data Report lists a NY 17 overlap with I-287 for its last 0.11 miles before the NJ line.  It does not indicate an overlap with I-87/NYST.

Just double-checked NYSDOT shapefiles, which confirms what Jim mentioned from the traffic data report.  NY 17 officially follows the old highway around the south and west side of Hillburn (including the southbound on-ramp to I-287), despite the fact that one must briefly take the Thruway to follow northbound NY 17.

Personally, I will probably just keep that part of NY 17 considered as clinched (since traffic intending to follow NY 17 NB must use the Thruway) and put a note to myself drive that other section whenever I finally clinch other stuff in the area.

For the record, these street blades that say "RT 17" seem to be the main posting here.

At the very least, I need to resync NY17Bin@I-87(15) to I-87@15(NYST)&I-287@15(87), to properly count the southernmost segment's concurrency with I-287 into NJ. This will happen in Part 2 of a big NY cleanup update.

I still think, based on what Markkos1992 found, that moving NY17 is worth looking into. But that does bear some discussion, and I'm kicking that can down the road for now.

Almost five years later. Any updated info on this?

Yeah, nothing has changed in GSV between signage versus the Roadway Data Inventory Viewer. (showing NY 17 on the official routing)  However, since traffic is truly directed to follow I-87/NYST in both directions, I still think that a change to show the concurrencies should be made.

When was this changed southbound?

Signage has been showing such for as long as there's been street view in the area, so it has to have been before 2008.

I finally drove Old NY 17 in the field yesterday so at least I do not have to doubt my list file in relation to this anymore.

I agree with changing the route to match the consistent signage in the field, route logs notwithstanding.
I'd like to do so in a way that maintains a sensible graph connection without adding a new point or going overboard on density.
Maybe if Exit 15A were recentered here or here or something... thoughts?

I think that the first location is better especially if the intention is to maintain a graph connection with NY 59 as well.  It reminds me of the handling of the north end of NJ 18.

Ooh, I failed to take NY59 into account. I have to choose with going >1PPI, putting the point off NY59's centerline, or losing the graph connection.
Right now, leaning toward putting the point off NY59's centerline, and using the first location as you suggested.

I see NJ18 as being a bit of a different animal...
NY59 clearly ends somewhere along Orange Turnpike; the problem with point placement arises from the granularity of the project & 1PPI.
NY18 is signed ending NB on the one road and beginning SB on the other. Point placement here is effectively splitting a couplet.

I actually saw end signs for NJ 18 on both Centennial Ave and Possumtown Rd (with a BEGIN sign behind it).  Having said that, I have no issues with leaving NJ 18 as-is or I would have mentioned it in the other thread.
