ENG: M62 'secret' junction w/ Long Lane
« on: March 05, 2023, 10:30:45 am »
So, between exits 34 & 35, there's a 'secret' JCT with Long Lane that is open to the public as far as I can tell.  No signage saying that you can't use it, and while it has gates on each side, seems they just leave them open most of the time.  When StreetView was there (2009), one side's gate was closed, but the other side wasn't.

Auto Shenanigans just did a video on this 'secret' interchange, and even he was able to use it this year still (skip to 6:36).

So, worthy of a point?

Ignoring the can of worms that would be opened as there's countless others of these that would need adding by precedent, not worthy of a point:
  • Is not proven to be functioning as a GSJ and thus a point needed to be added - the gate closure means its just a random road LILOing
  • We don't have actually-signed similar facilities ('Works unit only') that are not meant for public use
  • They are actively not highlighted on mapping or signage as they shouldn't be used (and we don't want to highlight them).
  • It is normally illegal to use these accesses unless authorised (ie emergency vehicle or Highways England) or directed by a police officer or traffic womble to do so - and even the Auto Shenanigans bloke* isn't risking it - he walked, rather than drove along the lane, and said "I'm not suggesting anything, but..." as if to absolve himself of any culpability should someone get into trouble for using it

Thinking about the ones near me, people don't know about, and if they did, they certainly wouldn't dream of using them and risk a Fixed Penalty Notice. Granted, this one is strangely without the "don't use this" signage, but that seems to be apathy at such an unnoteworthy entrance rather than giving permission to use it. It certainly far less well maintained than even this ropey one.

Also, it's taken you this long to suggest these? Auto Shenanigans loves these secret junctions.

*When he first started doing 'Secrets of the Mx' videos there were questions about filming on private land without permission, using other people's stuff without permission, whether his drone shots met the required paperwork, etc - even if they were alright, he seemed pretty blasé about minutia of the law and petty regulations.

Which is the only reason I made this post.  The other side is the same, no signage saying you can't use it.

Simple, the episode just aired today. LOL!  And it was the first time I saw it mentioned.

BTW, did you ever see my PM on something else?  ;)
