AL: AL158 Extension
« on: February 16, 2023, 06:21:56 pm »
As of December 2022, AL158 has been extended west to AL217, according to this post on the AARoads forum:
Quote from: asdfjkll
Looks like a 1.5 mile section of the new US-98 opened to traffic a few days ago between Newburn Road and Lott Road as per this tweet from the ALDOT Southwest Region Twitter: https://twitter.com/ALDOT_SW_Region/status/1606074630241820673 . As for the rest of the 2-lane new US-98 it should open by early 2024: All remaining projects not yet completed have been let and are under construction.

AL217 has a shaping point not too far off from the current intersection that can be converted to an AL158 point.

I was waiting for confirmation of signage before I extended it.

Curiosity. Is US 98 going to move to this new route once completed?  Any idea what will old route would be signed if that change were to happen?  I could see US 98 being rerouted through downtown Mobile via US43 or I-165.

GSV now shows signage.

Can confirm in the field, AL 158 crosses over 217.

I just drove the entirety of AL 158, which now extends all the way west to a junction with US 98 0.7 mile east of the state line. I didn't take photos because it was rainy, but I did note some approximate points for the eventual log:
0.0 - split from US 98
2.3 - drops back to 2 lanes (westbound roadway appears years from completion)
4.1 - CR 63 Wilmer-Georgetown Rd (separation with ramp, similar to AL 217)
9.4 - Stone Rd (at-grade intersection)
10.4 - ramp to AL 217
10.7 - crossover of AL 217
11.9 - resumes 4-lane configuration
12.2 - CR 31 Newburn Rd (current western terminus in TM)
Hope this helps.

I was going to post a thread on this but it looks like there is one already. I drove this last week from Newburn Rd all the way to US 98 just short of the Alabama line, and it is fully signed as AL 158. The new road is shown correctly in OSM.

Finally got around to this one today.  Pull request submitted.

Was a failed update.  Not updated on the site.  Still ends @ 'NewRd'.

https://travelmapping.net/hb/showroute.php?units=miles&r=al.al158

This was the file that should have been updated: https://github.com/TravelMapping/HighwayData/blob/master/hwy_data/AL/usansf/al.al158.wpt

I've quickly synced the file with the one Froggie updated, copied it byte for byte in #7655.  So, as soon as it's pulled it, it should work properly till usaal is activated.

Hope you don't mind me quickly putting in this fix for ya Froggie. :)

So that file and the other 3 routes that will become active in usaal just need to be removed from the usansf system and added in the usaal system on usaal activation, right?

I would think so.  Didn't look at the others to see if they are identical to their usaal counterparts.

Perhaps it's time to retire the entire usansf system. It's down to 5 routes, 4 in Alabama and 1 in Mississippi.

Both usaal and usams are in preview status, but doesn't mean now is not a good time to move these 5 routes out of usansf and into the appropriate state systems.

I would concur with this.  Seems it would solve a number of problems.  Sure, a handful of users would lose clinched active mileage, but that would only be temporary until the two systems are brought online.
