PA: I-476 131 in Incorrect Location?
« on: March 08, 2019, 11:12:36 am »
It looks like I-476 actually ends beyond the waypoint marked on TM.  Instead of ending at the I-81 ramps, there is a I-476 mile marker further "north" (actually south due to the u-turn I-476 takes at its northern end) where the ramp to US 6 / US 11 splits:  https://goo.gl/maps/3FibtuRdSB92

Of course, if anyone has any official information to the contrary, I'd love for the waypoint to stay put where it is, but it does look like the designation extends further than indicated on TM.

I think it really depends on where one considers the "main line" of the NE Extension to end and turn into just exit ramps. (Ignoring that these days, main line US6 uses ALL the "ramps" there.) Prior to I-81's construction, the NE Extension was proposed to go north to the NY state line, and the exit ramps were considered to start at the big 180-degree curve even though all traffic was forced onto the "ramps". After PA decided to take the federal money? That I'm not so sure... but until the ramps over to I-81 were built, all traffic had to go down to the surface road (US6/11) so one could argue that the "main line" of the highway continued to that interchange.

If we decide to move the end of I-476, I strongly recommend *adding* an extra waypoint rather than moving the existing one. That waypoint already exists on US6 and US11. But I'd rather keep I-476 as is if we can find a good reason to do so.

First off, I am not changing the location of the "131" point on I-476.  However, I can see that it should be extended south to US 6/US 11 based on the milemarkers and the green for I-476 here.  I think that I did not bother with this originally because US 6 takes care of both connections from I-476 to US 11 and I-81 here.

As a result, here is what I am seeing at the moment:

I-476:
131A  +131 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.482446&lon=-75.682746 (current 131 point on I-476)
131B http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.479026&lon=-75.685477 (new point at US 6 WB/US 11-lines up with US 6 and US 11)

US 6:
I-476(131B)  +US11_S http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.479026&lon=-75.685477
I-476(131A) +I-476 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.482446&lon=-75.682746

US 11:
I-476/6 +US6/6Bus +US6_E http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=41.479026&lon=-75.685477

Of course, we will see how the Scranton Beltway may affect this in the future.

dave1693, I think your point is valid, but I think the mile markers put the icing on the cake on adding another point to I-476.

Shapefiles also show I-476 extending all the way to US11, so I'm in favor of extending it.
Labels: The endpoint doesn't seem to be signed as exit 131, so I'd prefer US11 or US6/11 -- compare "I-95" at the south end.
At risk of opening a small can of worms: Exitsing "131" doesn't appear to be signed as such either.

You know that I do not like fake exit numbers.  I agree in that the references to 131 come only before the toll plaza.  You could potentially argue that "Exit 131" is the toll plaza itself.

Considering that the advance signage include I-81, US 6, and US 11, I would consider the whole interchange as Exit 131.  Otherwise, I believe we are opening a whole other can of worms about exit numbers not being signed at interchanges themselves.  I would prefer not to start removing exit numbers for them being omitted at an interchange itself despite being on advance signage.

Ah, I didn't find that sign. That works for me.
