NY: I-781 may end at US 11

At least GMSV appears to indicate it, and I field verified this last weekend.

We had this discussion ad nauseum before, when 781 was built.

MilepointRoute2015 shapefiles have I-781 ending at US11, with the road east of there, to the east end of the RR overpass, labeled as SR971Q. TDV and 2014 TDR ("EAST END OF BRIDGE OVER RR END RT 971Q") concur; the TDR also lists I-781 up to "US11 & 971Q". Signage at US11 also shows I-781 only to the west. Notwithstanding the END sign being after the exit ramp, it looks pretty cut & dry what to do here.
And why encourage civilians to go questionably close to military bases where their access is restricted, just to get a clinch?

Perhaps because the vast majority of civilians are not interested in clinching routes?

Plus, access to Fort Drum isn't COMPLETELY restricted.  Sure there are additional security measures for non-DoD civilians to go through, but there are a couple museums on base that are generally open to the public.

There's a specific lane for visitors at the main gate.

Had I had more time, I'd have been tempted to stop instead of just turning around at the last minute. I thought about asking if anyone there knows exactly where the old barracks were, though I doubt it. My Scout troop used to do our wilderness trips in Canada (you can guess where by looking at my routes traveled) and Ft Drum was an overnight stop in each direction. So one of my traveled routes is based solely on an estimate of where we spent the night. Access to the base was a lot less restricted 40 years ago.

I went to one of those museums at the end of my first trip on I-781. I used a similar excuse to enter Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri, when we thought an I-44 business spur ended within the base (the route was corrected later to end near but outside the base boundary).

It helped that my father was a Marine, so my interest in military museums was not pure b.s.

Fort Drum in the recent past has been fairly open to birders and other members of the public. Of course, if the base goes on heightened security for whatever reason, all bets are off.
