MO/WI: "Ferry" labels
« on: September 21, 2019, 04:13:39 pm »
MO77: Ferry -> DorHicFry
MO80: Ferry -> End? Appears there's no longer a ferry operating here. Would this still even be the current terminus?
WI US10: Ferry -> uh... LudManFry? SSBadFry?
WI13: Ferry -> RitAve? The actual ferry is shown connecting to Washington Ave a block north, by OSM, ESRI and Google. Replace?

WI42:
Ferry -> WasIslFry
Could the adjacent shaping point also be converted to a visible point for the passenger ferry? Being named... also "WasIslFry". Hmm. The labels would be something to sort out. WIPasFry & WICarFry, maybe? Is it even a viable place to enter/leave the route, if parking might be dodgy? Maybe a point at WisBayRd instead, to sidestep the labeling issue?

MO77: Ferry -> DorHicFry
Approaching this from a different direction: How about MO/KY? Like, it's not exactly the border but you're at the border point equivalent?

The most recent county map (2011) still has 80 going to "Belmont Landing" so "End" would be the most appropriate.

Better to make it PorDr, after Ports de Morts Drive, which is right there. Or "End", since WI 42 doesn't continue on the other side.

What about WI/MI as a pseudo-border point here too?

I can clean up that area a little and make the WasAve point like you suggest.

Both of these could cause problems if we were someday to set up a ferry routes system. Each of those routes would presumably include a border point in the middle, such as WI/MI in the middle of Lake Michigan for the S.S. Badger route.

NJ US 9 used to end at a pseudo-border point (DE/NJ) at the ferry terminal. I changed that to CapeMayFry, matching what had been and still is the waypoint label for the DE US 9 endpoint.

Other suggestions, to place endpoints at some place other than the ferry landing, unless the route actually ends short of the ferry terminal (as appears to be the case for MI US 10 -- WI US 10 signage continues right up to the loading ramp in Manitowoc), might also complicate a future ferry system, and I otherwise don't like that idea.

OK. I was just throwing the state line idea out there.

On WI 42, the intersection of the road is literally the end of the loading area, so it wouldn't be a change. In this case, too, the ferry itself is not part of the route.

Changed except for US 10, which I'm still pondering.

I think we should just change "Ferry" to "ManLudFry" using the location (town) names. Not services which might change.

US 10's ferry point in Wisconsin is now labeled LakeMicFry, which I hope ends this.

I waited for an update to the wpt file in early November and wondered why the file is not being changed. I just saw that the label was already changed three months ago. Marking topic solved.

Edit: Reopening.

WI42:
PorDr -> PorMorDr
It'd be nice to unhide that next-to-last shaping point, for access to the Island Clipper ferry.
If we can find a viable waypoint label for it (OSM's "WI 42 Spur" is either apocryphal or unsigned).
IslCliFry? GilRock?

GSV seems to favor PortMorDr actually.

The IslCliFry change on WI 42 is included here (https://github.com/TravelMapping/HighwayData/pull/5332).  I had to change it to IslCliFry from IslCiFry, which I presume was a typo.

Yes, it was a typo.
