FRA-GES E46
« on: October 07, 2022, 09:28:29 am »
West of Reims, the E46 is signed along A26 (eg 1, 2, 3), and not signed along N31 (eg eg) to Soissons, save on this sign.

In HDF/Aisne it's signed along N31 (eg) and not A26 (eg).

I checked all your GSV links. The situation is the very same from (minimum) 2011 through 2022. I don't think that it makes sense to change anything right now. We need more evidence, right?

Fudged it when the new A4 opened, before there was any streetview. Assumed it was right, found out it wasn't a decade later...

There's no need for more evidence. Either we follow the signs, or we fudge it to make a continuous route. Either is fine.

I do quite like the crazy zig-zag getting from the A4 to the N31.

One change would be the A34/D8e label, as N244 reaches the A34. It should be A34/N244.

(As an aside, the E420 is listed to Lille, but there's no signs south of the A34/A304 junction).

Either is fine. Sure. But which is best? Keeping as-is?

You know that I don't like the E routes thing. I don't know which E routes runs just 3 km north from my apartment. And which one runs 10km to the east? OSM nor GM indicate it. I don't.....
Nevertheless, I checked https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_route_E46 which only indicates Cherbourg-Octeville - Caen - Rouen - Beauvais - Compiegne - Soissons - Reims - Charleville-Mézières - Liège. Hmm, N31 is the direct route Soissons - Reims.... Keep as-is? A 2007 map is linked which also shows a direct line.

I asked google but failed to find useful info. Is there any up-to-date map indicating anything different to the 2007 thing? And where is the official list (last revision), we could also need it for Turkey. Should we fudge E84 and E90 too?

Edit: wikipedia links a 2016 document. It only indicates "E 46  Cherbourg - Caen - Rouen - Reims - Charleville-Mézières - Liège" now. "Beauvais - Compiegne - Soissons" was omitted if the wikipedia article was right. Has it changed? Is there any change log? Is 2016 the latest revision?

Edit2: E43 and E52 run close to me according to the 2016 document ;D I'm sure that I won't remember it tomorrow  8)

Officially (as I have the document open for the Canakkale Bridge thread). https://unece.org/DAM/trans/doc/2016/sc1/ECE-TRANS-SC1-2016-03-Rev1e.pdf

E 46 Cherbourg - Caen - Rouen - Reims - Charleville-Mézières - Liège

The problem is that, having built a large amount of their motorway network (and downgraded various relevant bits of their national network) since they last proposed amendments to the routes of the AGR*, they need to make changes based on the new network that exists. Most countries need to do this, not just France. Every decade or so, spend a few grand assessing your national network and proposing relevant changes to the agreement to match your network/desired network - either that, or save a few grand by just not bothering to add them to signs.

*Though they have proposed amendments to other bits of the agreement about a decade ago.

I really don't know what to do! Only cougar1989 and me traveled the N31 segment in GES where E46 would have to be removed. Both don't use E46 but N31 in list files, thus nothing would be broken.
If we'd change it to how it's signed, the route would be "interrupted" for 27km.

If anyone beside si404 and me would have a strong feeling on this, I'd go this way. :D

There are smaller similar issues open where I'm the maintainer too:
- CZE: I20 Plzeň would/should/could have a fudged E49
- DEU-BW: B34/E54 Oberlauchringen bypass // E54 onto new A98 section?

Both have only been changed in 2021. GES E46 signs are stable for more than ten years though. Should I leave all threads open for the time being? Forever? Thoughts?

Anyone? If no one has a strong feeling, I'll keep the continuous route as-is instead of going with signage ending here and restarting here.
