DC US1/50 ConAve_E
« on: March 11, 2023, 10:59:41 am »
Why is this point not at 7th Street, between the two directions of 1/50 on 6th/9th?

I believe because someone determined that US 1/US 50 are concurrent on 6th St up to New York Ave.  I know official maps/lack of signage make DC routing messy to begin with, but I do not think we can say that either direction is on 9th…

Yeah, it's mapped in the HB with both directions on 6th. Lack of signs makes it ambiguous but this seems to be the consensus routing.

It is worth noting that the left turn from Mt Vernon Pl onto 9th is not allowed and therefore US50 logically cannot follow 9th westbound unless it gets there indirectly.

I just looked up what the 2004 (lol) Thomas Guide* shows... it did indicate both 1 and 50 on both 6th and 9th (south/west bound on 9th), but then showed the north leg of Mt Vernon Pl as an eastbound one-way.

GMSV shows Mt Vernon as two way, but with a no-left turn onto 9th. Logically, 1 and 50 are only on 6th.

*I will forever curse RMN for killing the Thomas Guide.

This same rationale is why the western 1/50 point is between 14th and 15th (no left turn WB Constitution to SB 14th) and US 29 leaves Rhode Island Ave between 7th and 6th (no left turn EB RI to NB 7th).

I've always seen it forking right onto L to 9th on maps.

And going under the convention center?
That could make sense.

What we really need is DCDoT GIS shapefiles.

I've been using DDOT shapefiles for years.  Unfortunately, they do not include route data.

https://dcgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=9b7514d7f299492a9975d3435d21d6ac

The "Major Road Shields" layer includes a 50 shield on 9th Avenue:

The "Primary Signed Routes" layer shows 50 on Mt. Vernon to 9th (and not on 6th at all, neither here nor in "Secondary Signed Routes"):

It also shows some weirdness with 29 using K to 7th, but this is overridden by signs. These certainly aren't great layers, but they exist.

That resolves a question I came in here to ask.

I had to do a walking clinch of US 50 at the corner of 6th and Pennsylvania, and I would say that if there were US 50 signs eastbound anywhere between the west end of the Mall and I-395, I missed them. (The panel that used to be on NB NW 14th is gone.) Certainly not in the 9th/K/New York area, which is the site of the Apple Store Carnegie Library. I don't recall seeing a US 50 marker at 9th and G (entrance to Gallery Place Metro station).

I do recall seeing an awesome DC-US-1 panel somewhere, but it was night and I was much more worried/agitated about driving around and around first looking for a nonexistent parking space and then trying to fight my way through traffic to Union Station.
