VA: VA 43
« on: June 25, 2023, 07:41:45 pm »
I finished my clinch of VA 43 on Friday, and I was wondering why the decision was made to split the route in two.  I honestly thought that the turns for VA 43 were posted well enough (even along the Peaks Rd segment) to justify having the route be made into one with the Peaks Rd section deleted and an implied concurrency with the Blue Ridge Pkwy being acceptable.

Well, the gap is not officially part of VA 43, is it?

The way it's mapped matches how other similar cases are handled where a route is interrupted by a national park and does not officially continue through it. See also for example CA 120.

VA 43 was explicitly removed from the BRP in 1938.

I was originally thinking of AZ 64 when making my conclusion.  I think CA 120 is a different situation since there is a much longer gap from what I see in comparison to VA 43.

In regard to Peaks Rd, there are VA 43 rectangles as far west as SR 614.

The length of the gap isn't what matters, it's whether the state considers the road through the park to be part of the route or not. California is quite explicit that CA 120 does not exist as a designation within Yosemite. Arizona, meanwhile, does consider AZ 64 to continue through the park and the mile markers reflect this, even though ADOT does not maintain the road within the park.
