usanp: request to add Chisos Basin Road in Big Bend National Park
« on: September 30, 2020, 05:24:15 pm »
The Chisos Basin Road in Big Bend NP, a 6 mi paved road to the park lodge and the best hiking in the park, is not included in usanp. I am requesting that it be added. I believe we are omitting the road to one of the top two sites in the park.  It does dead-end, but so do the included roads to Santa Elena and Rio Grande Village.

What were the original criteria for inclusion?
Does this road meet them?

Don't know where the usanp thread is - checked both here and aaroads.

That it's shorter than the other roads in the park, and tile mapping is terrible (calling it 'Basin Junctio' - yes no 'n', rather than Chisos Basin Road, per the nps map), and no one mentioned it at the time, seems to be why it was passed over for inclusion, rather than any actual reason.

There's no reason why it couldn't be included if TX's maintainer wants it so.

The usanp thread is here: https://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=196.0

I read the thread and found this comment. I think Chisos Basin Rd qualifies under #5

Criteria are:
1) a missing gap in an existing system (eg Mammoth Cave, California Routes, Yellowstone)
2) a specific NPS unit for the road (eg Natchez Trace, Blue Ridge, George Washington Memorial and Baltimore-Washington Parkways)
3) a through route linking roads already in (eg Painted Canyon Road)
4) an extension of an existing system into a park
5) roads that seem important enough and link with other roads - even if they dead-end

The Chisos Basin area is highlighted on the park map and is prominent on the park website. I believe the road to it merits inclusion.

A local Maine equivalent to the Chisos Mtn Rd is the road to Cadillac Mtn in Acadia NP. It too is a dead end road off of another park road.

I guess that the topic is still open since I didn't find the route in HB. @yakra, do you want to add the route?
