If those maintaining Europe (just si & michih right now, right?)

Since Iceland is Europe, Duke87 also maintains a European region ;)

I think it's fine having separate overarching color schemes for Europe and North America; one size does not fit all, etc. etc.

Don't forget Africa, Asia, Oceania, South America and Antarctica... :D The latter has a typo in continents.csv, I'll fix now.

If we can come up with some general agreement on better default color codes, I'm all for it.  The original ones weren't given a ton of thought by me.
Yes, I want to move us in that direction.

Here are the latest colors I've been using in the mapviews I've made in response to others' posts:
       blue 6464FF / rgb(100,100,255) | 0000DC / rgb(0,0,220)
       teal 64C8C8 / rgb(100,200,200) | 008CA0 / rgb(0,140,160)
      green 64C864 / rgb(100,200,100) | 00E000 / rgb(0,224,0)
        red FF6464 / rgb(255,100,100) | E00000 / rgb(224,0,0)
    magenta FF64FF / rgb(255,100,255) | D000D0 / rgb(208,0,208)
lightsalmon E0A2A2 / rgb(224,162,162) | F09673 / rgb(240,150,115)
      brown 999866 / rgb(153,152,102) | 996600 / rgb(153,102,0)
     yellow FFD864 / rgb(255,216,100) | E8B000 / rgb(232,176,0)

Some sample mapviews
with colors specified tier-by-tier.
(As such, again, keep in mind that these mockups won't be a 1:1 representation of how a final product would look. Many regions have different-colored systems of the same tier, such as usausb & usasf.)
Europe Template:
michih in DEU,POL,DNK
si404 in ENG
North America Template (3 = teal, E.G. usasf)
oscar in NS
yakra in ME
vdeane in NY
mapcat in NS
North America Template (3 = magenta, E.G. usausb)
yakra in ME
julmac in MT
mapcat in MT
vdeane in NY

Please have a look around at the maps. Substitute your own username and your preferred region(s).
OK? In need of improvement? -- Let me know what you think.

If nothing else, I hope we can at least agree these colors are an improvement on the current TM defaults. :)

We can also change the default map tiles to some other OSM-based ones if that makes for a better view with our new colors.

After a quick look, it's a definite improvement.  I'd also like it if we can reserve brown for things like usaush and usanp and use some other default for U.S. state systems.  But that's a separate issue.

mapcat in MT with tier 3 magenta and tier 4 light salmon is very red-pink. unclinched us routes and clinched state routes are similar colours.

The only other option in the system right now is DE. Not a good option IMO; it uses pretty bold colors that don't make for good contrast from the polylines.

This won't be a problem in North America unless we move tier 4 to lightsalmon, a separate issue as Jim notes.
But this could be an issue in other places...
lkefct in ISR:
custom colors | current defaults
I can see the difference (unclinched red vs clinched lightsalmon) OK, but yes, it doesn't immediately jump out at me. It also helps that I'm looking at ISR at higher zoom levels to pick out the highways. It's harder to pick out on the default zoom level on my monitor for MT -- or even for ISR.
This one will take a little more thought...

The tmtest server is now using this color scheme so we can check out more users and places more easily.

I would love to click that link, but I only have 4 gigs of RAM and 4 gigs of swap file... 8)
Maybe soon I'll try the mapview out with Chromium or Chrome, and see if the memory footprint is lower, etc.

My FF needs additional 1.2GB RAM for it. On unloading, there is a peak up to additional 2.0GB.

The tmtest server is now using this color scheme so we can check out more users and places more easily.
In a change not yet reflected in tmjsfuncs.js, these colors appear to have migrated to the main tm server, with the exception of untraveled yellow, which appears to still be the old #FFFF80 on tmtest as well.
I don't know whether this (the migration, that is) was intentional. Jim?

Asia :)
Exactly. I picked ISR as an Asian mapview example, as it contains asim system (red;3) and isrh (lightsalmon;4).

mapcat in MT with tier 3 magenta and tier 4 light salmon is very red-pink. unclinched us routes and clinched state routes are similar colours.
Back to attempting to sort out unclinched red vs clinched lightsalmon:

First, restoring the original TM clinched lightsalmon:
lkefct in ISR
mapcat in MT
michih in DEU,POL,DNK
si404 in ENG
From there, turning up the saturation a little more:
lkefct in ISR
mapcat in MT
michih in DEU,POL,DNK
si404 in ENG
Personally, I like the 2nd option a little better when viewing Si's ENG map.

Si, what do you think of these maps? Michih?

I didn't mean to make any changes on the tm server for this.  Maybe the recent shields updates caused me to copy a file unintentionally.

Traveling home the next few days from Eclipse Central, Nebraska, so I might not do much about this until late week.

Michih?

I think rgb(255,160,122) vs. rgb(255,151,110) for untraveled tier 4 looks identical...
