AL US84 near Elba
« on: September 09, 2017, 12:18:03 am »
It looks like US84 now bypasses Elba, AL. I just drove it today while evacuating from Hurricane Irma. It's visible on Mapnik if you zoom in enough.

Were you able to tell what did they do with existing US 84 through Elba?  Is it a state route or business route?

I could not tell for certain. I didn't even realize I was on the new route until reaching AL 203, where the signage hasn't yet been updated. The west end of Elba had the (already existing) turn for 189, but I didn't see any other route signs. It's definitely not a business route, but I don't know for sure that it isn't a new (or rerouted) state highway.

AL: US 84 in Elba

On a separate note, US84 is now routed on a bypass north of Elba, AL. It looked like a recent change. I did not see any "Business" signage here. In the HB, US84 is still goes through town. I drove AL87 south to north and noticed the US84 junction signs on the north edge of town (Bypass St). This one I did not stop to photograph.

I can confirm the US84 move, and there were no business route signs on either side of town (I was on 84 around Elba).

Split these comments off because I need help regarding US 84 in Elba.  I see how OSM and Google Maps show the rest of the Elba bypass open, but ALDOT's Coffee County Milepost map does not show it and is dated April 2017.  I need confirmation on some things before I can change the US 84 list:

- Confirmation (preferably visual proof) that US 84 is signed on the bypass.
- Status of any potential Business or Alabama state route along US 84's old alignment through the center of town.
- Status of AL 189:  does it follow the western part of the bypass or no?
- Status of AL 87:  does it follow the bypass or is it still in town?
- Signage at the intersection at the eastern end of the bypass.

Per this youtube video ( AL 87 was put on the bypass which is definitely signed US 84.  This video appears to show only the newest part of the bypass starting at the eastern end and shows only AL 87 south heading left near the beginning (i.e. no 84 business posting there).  It also confirms AL 203 is no longer signed on the bypass at AL 125.  Video ends just after AL 125 and Part 1 just drives it the other direction.

So not many of your questions answered with youtube

Signed around the bypass: Yes (and it's turn lanes for the old route, so you are on the bypass without realizing it).
Other routes on the old routing: Unknown
AL 189: Follows the western part of the bypass (I do recall the overlap, and I mentioned the turnoff on the west end of the bypass)
AL 87: I think that goes through town, but I don't recall.
Eastern signage: I didn't see any, but I wasn't looking, either.

Between the video and Nate's notes, I have enough to update this.  Files updated and pull request submitted.
