These Github tickets related to shields can probably be closed now ...

Thanks, closed.  And thanks for all the work improving the shields.

Should shields for double-bannered routes be shown in the opposite order, i.e. with the 1st listed banner on bottom & 2nd listed banner on top?

I think it should be.

Would also be better if we could instead have the shield show '70A' instead, due to that's how TN signs the base Alternate route(s).

This came up when the banners were introduced (starting at the below post on page 12), but I don't think there ever was an agreed-upon solution.

I've removed the extra letter from (all) usausb shields that shouldn't be in (most of) them.

The problematic cases are ones like US 20A in New York, which is signed as such rather than Alt US 20.  Not sure how best to handle those cases generically.  I could add a handful of special cases.

Easy enough to add if we can get an SVG-format version.
I got it down to a PNG, then tried to convert that to an SVG using an online converter and it didn't work (see attached).
Attempted this a second time with the logo I pulled off the website; don't think there's copyright concerns since it's just text with geometric shapes.
This topic coming up again reminded me of the Northwest Parkway again; I took the PNG from Wikipedia and used an online SVG converter to make the attached file. It's a little janky but at the scale we'd be using it for I think it would be fine.

Resurrecting this topic now that usams is in preview, is there any way to change the scenic routes to the blue shields and text/numerals? (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_Highway_333)

I think we have what we need in place overall to be able to make this happen.  I will try to take a look some time fairly soon.

Would love to do this with FL's Toll routes.  However, we'd have to figure out how to deal with the few that use normal shields for part, and toll for the other part.

Either we would have to split the route, or figure out a way to display two shields at once.

Earlier discussion on this is in a GitHub Issue: https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/614

It's not currently a priority for me, but I'd be happy to provide a testing environment if anyone wants to take it on.

PA 66 and PA 43 would have the same issue.

TECHNICALLY, so do I-376 and I-476 in PA -- but in the toll sections of those, the PA Tpk 376/476 signs are interspersed with standard I-376/476 signs so we could let those slide.

So does I-76 occasionally.  But I would say these are contractor goofs for having those get posted.

I have been poking around at the shield generator the last few weeks to see if there are any additions/fixes that I could help with. The first system I took a look at was usanyp, which can be divided into 5 cases shown below:

Case 1 - The following parkways have no shields in the wild, so they will continue to get a generic shield for usanyp.  As vdeane mentioned in this old thread, the default for usanyp could be set to the generic usasf shield (which would look better IMO as well):
•   Bay Pkwy
•   Cross Bay Pkwy
•   Ocean Pkwy (Brooklyn)
•   Prospect Mtn Hwy
•   Shore Front Pkwy
•   South (aka Beaver Island) Pkwy

Case 2 - The following parkways already have the proper shields live on TM:
•   Bear Mtn Pkwy
•   Bear Mtn Pkwy (Yorktown)
•   Cross County Pkwy
•   Lake Ontario State Pkwy
•   Lake Ontario State Pkwy Spur
•   Lake Welch Drive
•   Saw Mill River Pkwy
•   Seven Lakes Drive
•   Sprain Brook Pkwy
•   Taconic State Pkwy

Case 3 - The following NYC-maintained parkways have shields uploaded to Wikimedia Commons without the artwork included, due to copyright issues. We can either use the “neutered” shields or have them revert to the usanyp/usasf default:
•   Belt Pkwy
•   Cross Island Pkwy
•   FDR Drive
•   Grand Central Pkwy
•   Harlem River Drive
•   Henry Hudson Pkwy
•   Jackie Robinson Pkwy
•   Korean War Vets Pkwy
•   Mosholu Pkwy
•   Pelham Pkwy

Case 4 - The following parkways (mostly on Long Island) have shields uploaded to Wikimedia Commons that can be easily added without any copyright issues:
•   Bethpage State Pkwy
•   Heckscher Pkwy
•   Loop Pkwy
•   Meadowbrook State Pkwy
•   Niagara Scenic Pkwy
•   Niagara Scenic Pkwy (Niagara Falls)
•   Niagara Scenic Pkwy Spur
•   Northern State Pkwy
•   Ocean Pkwy (Long Island)
•   Robert Moses Causeway
•   Sagtikos State Pkwy
•   Southern State Pkwy
•   Sunken Meadow State Pkwy

Case 5 - The following parkways have two shields, one for the NYC portion and one for the Westchester portion. Since we don’t yet have the capability of displaying multiple shields, we can either go with the NYS-style shield, "neutered" NYC-style shield, or the usanyp/usasf default. I would definitely prefer to see the green NYS-style shield for both, especially since I don't recall ever seeing a NYC-style shield for the Hutch in the wild:
•   Bronx River Pkwy
•   Hutchinson River Pkwy

Pull requests for Cases 1 and 4 will be submitted shortly if there are no issues. Cases 2 and 5 need further discussion.

Next was usasf, which I only found one shield needed for here that was usable: Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector. Pull request to be submitted shortly.

Next we have Beltway 8 in TX, which currently has a generated shield that has text spaced too far apart and runs out of the shield. Since it is a one-off shield anyway, it is probably best off being replaced with the shield from Wikimedia Commons. Pull request to be submitted shortly.

Next is usaar, which has special shields for the AR980 segments (Airport Routes) and a bunch of other high-numbered routes (Marine Fuel Tax Routes). Markkos1992's post from another thread about AR722-1A rendering as AR1A made me go down this rabbit hole. The AR980's can wait until I learn more about PHP (so I don't have to upload 31 copies of the same shield), but I was able to go through all of the Marine Fuel Tax Routes, and most have usable shields:
  • 722-1A
  • 902-1A
  • 915-1A
  • 915-2
  • 926
  • 933-1
  • 933-2
  • 935-1 (no file on Wikimedia Commons, and my SVG editing skills are inept, but I think I got it right after a while :) )
  • 946-1
  • 949-2
  • 949-3
  • 949-4
  • 956-1
So all of the Marine Fuel Tax Routes can be added in a coming pull request.

Some other stuff I found needs more discussion and can wait until these changes are made first.

Last minute addition to usasf: LaSalle Expy, a unique square green escutcheon. I made an SVG myself from a few different files. I think I'm getting a hang of this now...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TL;DR list:
  • Changing usanyp default to match usasf, etc.
  • Adding a bunch of usanyp shields (mostly on Long Island)
  • Adding shield for Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector
  • Fixing shield for TX Beltway 8
  • Adding usaar's Marine Fuel Tax route shields
  • Adding shield for NY LaSalle Expy
  • Consensus on the NYC Parkways and "1/2 NYC" Parkways needed
