I have been poking around at the shield generator the last few weeks to see if there are any additions/fixes that I could help with. The first system I took a look at was usanyp, which can be divided into 5 cases shown below:

Case 1 - The following parkways have no shields in the wild, so they will continue to get a generic shield for usanyp.  As vdeane mentioned in this old thread, the default for usanyp could be set to the generic usasf shield (which would look better IMO as well):
•   Bay Pkwy
•   Cross Bay Pkwy
•   Ocean Pkwy (Brooklyn)
•   Prospect Mtn Hwy
•   Shore Front Pkwy
•   South (aka Beaver Island) Pkwy

Case 2 - The following parkways already have the proper shields live on TM:
•   Bear Mtn Pkwy
•   Bear Mtn Pkwy (Yorktown)
•   Cross County Pkwy
•   Lake Ontario State Pkwy
•   Lake Ontario State Pkwy Spur
•   Lake Welch Drive
•   Saw Mill River Pkwy
•   Seven Lakes Drive
•   Sprain Brook Pkwy
•   Taconic State Pkwy

Case 3 - The following NYC-maintained parkways have shields uploaded to Wikimedia Commons without the artwork included, due to copyright issues. We can either use the “neutered” shields or have them revert to the usanyp/usasf default:
•   Belt Pkwy
•   Cross Island Pkwy
•   FDR Drive
•   Grand Central Pkwy
•   Harlem River Drive
•   Henry Hudson Pkwy
•   Jackie Robinson Pkwy
•   Korean War Vets Pkwy
•   Mosholu Pkwy
•   Pelham Pkwy

Case 4 - The following parkways (mostly on Long Island) have shields uploaded to Wikimedia Commons that can be easily added without any copyright issues:
•   Bethpage State Pkwy
•   Heckscher Pkwy
•   Loop Pkwy
•   Meadowbrook State Pkwy
•   Niagara Scenic Pkwy
•   Niagara Scenic Pkwy (Niagara Falls)
•   Niagara Scenic Pkwy Spur
•   Northern State Pkwy
•   Ocean Pkwy (Long Island)
•   Robert Moses Causeway
•   Sagtikos State Pkwy
•   Southern State Pkwy
•   Sunken Meadow State Pkwy

Case 5 - The following parkways have two shields, one for the NYC portion and one for the Westchester portion. Since we don’t yet have the capability of displaying multiple shields, we can either go with the NYS-style shield, "neutered" NYC-style shield, or the usanyp/usasf default. I would definitely prefer to see the green NYS-style shield for both, especially since I don't recall ever seeing a NYC-style shield for the Hutch in the wild:
•   Bronx River Pkwy
•   Hutchinson River Pkwy

Pull requests for Cases 1 and 4 will be submitted shortly if there are no issues. Cases 2 and 5 need further discussion.

Next was usasf, which I only found one shield needed for here that was usable: Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector. Pull request to be submitted shortly.

Next we have Beltway 8 in TX, which currently has a generated shield that has text spaced too far apart and runs out of the shield. Since it is a one-off shield anyway, it is probably best off being replaced with the shield from Wikimedia Commons. Pull request to be submitted shortly.

Next is usaar, which has special shields for the AR980 segments (Airport Routes) and a bunch of other high-numbered routes (Marine Fuel Tax Routes). Markkos1992's post from another thread about AR722-1A rendering as AR1A made me go down this rabbit hole. The AR980's can wait until I learn more about PHP (so I don't have to upload 31 copies of the same shield), but I was able to go through all of the Marine Fuel Tax Routes, and most have usable shields:
  • 722-1A
  • 902-1A
  • 915-1A
  • 915-2
  • 926
  • 933-1
  • 933-2
  • 935-1 (no file on Wikimedia Commons, and my SVG editing skills are inept, but I think I got it right after a while :) )
  • 946-1
  • 949-2
  • 949-3
  • 949-4
  • 956-1
So all of the Marine Fuel Tax Routes can be added in a coming pull request.

Some other stuff I found needs more discussion and can wait until these changes are made first.

Last minute addition to usasf: LaSalle Expy, a unique square green escutcheon. I made an SVG myself from a few different files. I think I'm getting a hang of this now...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TL;DR list:
  • Changing usanyp default to match usasf, etc.
  • Adding a bunch of usanyp shields (mostly on Long Island)
  • Adding shield for Atlantic City-Brigantine Connector
  • Fixing shield for TX Beltway 8
  • Adding usaar's Marine Fuel Tax route shields
  • Adding shield for NY LaSalle Expy
  • Consensus on the NYC Parkways and "1/2 NYC" Parkways needed
I believe you mean cases 3 and 5 instead of 2 and 5?

The LaSalle no longer uses the square shield.  Now it has one more similar to the parkways.  I have an imperfect PNG on my website., which last I checked, is the only online version of the new shield outside of photos/street view.

Incidentally, how can a highway shield have a copyright issue?

Not sure what you are referring to.

That's the one I made (the "new" one), since the one on Wikimedia Commons was the green square with text (the "old" one). I was referring to the new one using a square, 2-digit shield blank as unique.

That's a great question. Whoever uploaded the neutered NYC parkway shields seemed to think so.

Thanks for working on this.  The first batch that I pulled in are up on the staging server tmstage.teresco.org

If all looks good there, I can install on the production site.

Your post mentioned "Cases 2 and 5 need further discussion.", but Case 2 is parkways that already have the proper shields on TM, so i don't see why that would require further discussion.

To be fair, this could have been a lot more clear if this forum was on SMF 2.1 like AARoads and had the "quote selected text" function.

Really appreciate the work on these. Would you have time to look into the Kentucky parkway signs?

Regarding Case 3, I had the same question about how signs could be copyrighted. A shield for the Jackie Robinson parkway on TM without Jackie Robinson's picture would be disappointing to say the least. Re Case 5, I agree with you that the NYS shield would be appropriate.

Thanks for putting it on TMstage, since of course stuff isn't working as planned.
What works:
 - usanyp default
 - Beltway 8
 - AtlBriCon
 - Most of the usanyp shields

What doesn't work:
 - Meadowbrook Pkwy
 - Niagara Scenic Pkwy family
 - usaar Marine Fuel Tax family

Of the stuff that doesn't work, everything is behaving the same (except for AR956-1, where I made a typo in the file name :pan:): only showing a small part of the top left corner as if the shields are way too big. Not sure what is causing that.

Yes you are right, 3 and 5. Apologies for the confusion.

usakyp could potentially be an issue due to the state tourism logo on the bottom. I suppose I could strip that out, but as you mentioned with the NYC usanyp shields, they wouldn't look right without the artwork. Now I'd argue, especially in the usakyp case, that we would be giving them free advertising, given the nature of this site, but I'm not sure how everyone else feels. Unfortunately I can't find any SVG's of the NYC usanyp shield with artwork though...

I remember similar problems when I added some other shield generator templates.  It was a long time ago, and I don't recall the fix.

I'm happy to put anything you'd like to try out up on tmstage.  If you want to try some things before commiting them to GitHub, you can email me the files you'd like to try out.

I looked back at this forum thread and found discussion regarding missing viewbox data. I edited AR915-2 (I picked a broken one at random), and I think it should work, so it can be tested on TMstage. Sent a PM regarding emailing the file.

For case 5, I seem to recall something about TM having (or developing?) a system to cycle through shields for routes that have multiple, so there might not be a need to choose.

CHM had that feature. There's definitely a need for it here in Puerto Rico and Tennessee as well.

Viewbox did seem to be the problem. Meadowbrook Pkwy, Niagara Scenic Pkwy, and AR915-2 are fixed on TMstage. The remainder will be in a pull request shortly.

That should take care of the first batch.

Yes: https://github.com/TravelMapping/Web/issues/614

CHM used animated GIFs I believe, which made it easy, but TM uses SVG files and generates most of them on demand from templates.  I have ideas how it might work, but it's potentially a substantial project that I have not been able to make a priority.  As always with these kinds of enhancements, I'd very much welcome any efforts by others!

Interesting.  All the more curious that Tim wanted to split usavt into two systems, then.
