TN: TN 66 realigned in Morristown area
« on: November 08, 2020, 06:10:13 pm »
The new highway between TN 160 and TN 342 opened up this weekend.  (https://www.citizentribune.com/news/local/state-route-66-officially-open/article_de569798-2196-11eb-be29-eb1608624888.html)

So instead of making a right turn, then a left onto Valley Home Road to reach TN 160, TN 66 continues straight ahead.

Now, once you reach TN 160, the signage disagrees on what happens to TN 66.  If you continue straight past TN 160, the signage indicates that TN 66 overlaps TN 474 onto Merchants Greene Rd to US 11E.  However, there is no TN 66 signage in either direction on US 11E, nor is there any along TN 474 southbound.  If you happen to exit onto SB TN 160, you will come across a sign that says "NORTH TN 66" (it's been there for a while).  At least as of Friday the 6th, MLK Parkway was still signed as TN 66 between TN 160 and US 11E.  I'm guessing the NB signs along TN 474 are erroneous (they also show 474 as a primary route and not secondary), but the old route along Valley Home Rd was still signed as 66 also, so...?

Thanks for the report. Unfortunately access to that article requires a paid subscription. Imagery shows where the new road is, so drafting it shouldn't be a problem, but I need to check with TDOT to see what's going on north of 160, and ensure that the old segments of 66 are no longer in the state system.

TN: TN 66 (Morristown) moved to new alignment, absorbing TN 474
« Reply #2 on: July 09, 2021, 10:33:28 am »
On the final leg of my trip home from Montana, yesterday I did some exploring off I-81 in the Morristown TN area, to clear up a small issue with my list file ... only to find a bigger issue.

TN 66, between TN 341 and US 11E in Morristown, has been completely replaced, moved onto a new expressway alignment (shown in OSM, but not ESRI WorldStreetMap). The new alignment absorbed TN 474, with TN 474 signage removed (at least southbound, on TN 160 westbound, and EB on US 11E) and replaced with TN 66 signage.

Valley Home Rd., part of the old TN 66 alignment, now has no TN 66 or other route signage on both directions of TN 160.

I don't know what happened to the other part of the old alignment, on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway between TN 160 and US 11E.

Thanks for the reminder. I requested more info from TDOT and received a map of the new alignment. Their graphic shows 66 following TN 34 (US 11E) from US 11E's former junction with TN 474 to the main TN 66 segment in Bulls Gap, so I will combine TN66Mor with TN66 (Rogersville) even though the US 11E segment very likely is not signed. This will be in my next set of updates.

Edit: since the US11E point is in use in both TN66 files, I won't combine the two segments in order to avoid breaking lists.

It looks like a graph connection between TN 66 and TN 160 is needed.

Ooh, you're right. I used the old TN 474 point at first, and then only adjusted the location in the TN 160 file. Thanks for catching that. https://github.com/TravelMapping/HighwayData/pull/5000
