CA: CA 58 reroute
« on: November 12, 2022, 09:33:05 pm »
There have been some changes to CA 58 between I-5 and CA 99. Caltrans has relinquished the former alignment of CA 58 along Blue Star Memorial Highway and Rosedale Highway between I-5 and Mohawk Street and moved the signed route to Stockdale Highway, which lines up with Westside Parkway. Per the postmile lookup tool, SR 58 now follows Stockdale Highway. Apart from I-5 Exit 253, where 58 is not signed from I-5, the new route is very well-signed, including with signs along Mohawk Street connecting Westside Parkway to Rosedale Highway. EB traffic along CA 58 is directed to use I-5 SB. GSV shows that signs along the old route have been removed.

As of today, the signed route is as follows:
- West of I-5: No change
- I-5 concurrency between Stockdale Highway (Exit 253) and Exit 257, reinforced by signs at each end of concurrency telling CA 58 traffic to use I-5
- Stockdale Highway between I-5 and Westside Parkway
- Westside Parkway west of Mohawk Street
- Mohawk Street between Westside Parkway and Rosedale Highway
- Rosedale Highway between Mohawk Street and CA 99

I propose that CA 58 be moved onto the above route. Basically, this would involve routing CA58 onto what is now CA58Wes and WesPkwy west of Mohawk Street, with connecting segments along I-5 and Mohawk Street. Westside Parkway east of Mohawk Street is unnumbered at this time, but will become numbered when the CA 99 interchange is complete. I drove CA 58 today and can confirm that the above is signed in the field.

I assume the Mohawk-Rosedale-99 bit is temporary until the Centennial Corridor connection opens next year.

Still, that's what to map for now until it moves again.

GSV shows that signs along the old [Rosedale Hwy] route have been removed.

Does that include signs along CA 43, where it overlapped with the old route? Last I checked, there were signs at each junction of CA 43 with the old route.

FWIW, local governments are supposed to maintain continuation signage on the relinquished part of CA 58, though that requirement is often ignored.

As of today, the signed route is as follows:

...

- Westside Parkway west of Mohawk Street

Last I checked, the Stockdale Hwy routing continues onto the Westside Pkwy, but officially only to Coffee St. (per PQT, and Caltrans' route adoption of the Westside Pkwy west of Coffee St.), though GMSV showed some CA 58 signage east of there to Mohawk St.

I want to look into this some more, including among other things whether Caltrans has done a temporary adoption of Mohawk St. into the state highway system (as it did with a CA 132 reroute in Modesto, for part of Dakota St.). I just got back from my niece's wedding in northern MD, and need to catch up with other stuff that happened back home while I was out.
