Mislabeled Route Markers!!
« on: September 04, 2023, 04:56:16 pm »
Was driving through Central PA this weekend when I stumbled across an apparent mistake! The signage on PA829 just before it intersects with US22 has a sign for the junction ahead, but the 22 is encapsulated within the Pennsylvania keystone used for state highway routes instead of the standard US highway shield! I had to snag a picture... to the best of my knowledge, PA 22 hasn't been around since the 1920s, and it was certainly not in this part of the state.

Has anyone else come across similar mistakes in signage shape/numbering, old sign designs that have far outlived their mandate, or other anomalies? If so, I'd love to hear about it! Might be worth a trip someday...

Also of note: Many of the US 22 postings in this area use a different (and in my opinion, ugly) shield shape. Is this specific to certain parts of Pennsylvania?

^ This kind of sign-o is really common, in PA and elsewhere. Not worth the effort to try to catalog them all.

The most gruesome such error is one I found just a few blocks from the White House, which mislabeled US 29 as I-29 (in another time zone entirely). That one was fixed a few months later.

The AARoads Forum has many examples most notably shown in this thread.  (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18607.0)

I have found several of these odd postings.

I never got a picture, but for several years US 19 was marked with a sign as GA 19 at the Northridge exit SB onramp coming east from GA 9.  Contractors were doing some work to widen the ramp and put up a new sign.  GDOT didn't fix for at least a year.
