GA: GA201 Reroute at Tunnel Hill
« on: July 13, 2024, 12:20:34 pm »
Was looking at Google Maps planning a trip today and it looks like GA 201 has been or is in process of being rerouted onto new road north of Tunnel Hill.  There is new road north of town N. New Varnell Rd. that provides more direct access to I-75.  GMSV dated from April shows some new route signs, but no direction indictors on the new route, but no signage that I can see on US 41.  GMSV also still shows signage along old route through Tunnel Hill.  Maybe this is just an item to watch?

I see signage on US 41 looking at GSV.

Looks like this was here when I clinched US 41/GA 3 here on February 29th.

This article seems to make it clear that the intent was to reroute GA 201.

Interesting.  I didn't see signage on 41 at new intersection when I looked the other day.  There was a pole with a direction, but no route marker.  But, there are still route markers on original route in Tunnel Hill at US 41 dated to May 2024.  Thus my confusion on what to do.

US41 now has turn signs for GA201 at North New Varnell Road (as of October 2024, per GMSV). However, southbound 41 only shows GA201 heading east from the intersection, rather than east and south. On the other hand, October photos show GA201 signs still remaining south of Tunnel Hill. Reroute done locally, but will keep watching in case there is a shortening of the route. On GA201, renamed US41_N to THillCSt (new location is named US41/76, since US41_N is in use). On US41/US76/GA3, moved GA201_N to new point and renamed old GA201_N to THillCSt (not in use on any of these routes).

Pull request coming soon.

Shouldn't both labels on each end of GA-201's multiplex with US-41/76 be 'US41/76_*' then?

I can do that. US41/76_N and US41/76_S (with the existing label as an Alt label). Other changes will be made as described above.

Yikes, major issue with GA-201's file.

The 'VarRd_S' point should have been removed.  Now the file has a sharp angle jumping back to the 'old' route.

Just deleting the 'VarRd_S' point should fix this issue in a separate PR.  But it's something that should be addressed ASAP.

Pull request submitted.

Going to mark this as solved when I get to the next batch of GA updates (mid-January), unless I see any other comments.
