SK: Alt TCH 1 in Moose Jaw
« on: May 28, 2025, 03:36:15 pm »
Saw lots of signs for this a couple of weeks ago. It follows Athabasca St and SK 2:

Exit from Manitoba Expy
Athabasca St 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Main St (SK 2)

The one on Main St has been replaced by a new one at the corner of Main & Hall.

No idea if it's official, but it's signed pretty well. Worth adding?

If this gets added, I would like to see the alternate TCH 1 routes is Regina get added too. The original city route along Victoria/Albert Street is still well signed, as is the first bypass (ring road) route. Unfortunately the route signage in Regina was not well reconciled when the new bypass opened, and it bugs me that the section of Victoria Ave between the new bypass and the ring road is not currently included in the HB. There is also an alternate SK 4 route in North Battleford along Territorial Drive that is well signed.

OTOH, Wisconsin has a ton of Alternate Interstate routes. They are well-signed enough to be used as emergency detours to bypass Interstate closures. None of them are in the HB, except where an alternate route happens to overlap with a regular state-maintained route. I think there is no interest in adding them, or similar routes in other states, to the HB.

For a counter-example in Saskatchewan, when the highways ministry built a route 39 bypass of Estevan, it moved 39 to the new road, but kept the old road through downtown and renumbered it 39A. That's not what it did in Regina, or Moose Jaw.

I don't think this is anything like those emergency detour routes. The alternate routes in Saskatchewan seem to truly act as alternatives to their vanilla counterpart, a choice to make when you're not in a hurry and looking for more interesting places to stop. There are other reasons to reject them (not being signed at their endpoints, for example) that are stronger arguments, though that might call into question some of the others.
