GIS data from 08/30/25 concurs that 'FL-54Zep' is no longer a state route.
Also interesting, it seems they decommissioned FL-581 there too.
Per Brent Ivy (who works for FDOT District 7 and is directly involved with the jurisdictional transfer of maintenance), SR 54 is still officially designated east of I-75, as is SR 581. Until he submits the right-of-way maps with the transfer (required by statute), SR 54 and SR 581 will remain. I'll post here when he lets me know that the maps are finalized and certified.
Interesting that they jumped the gun with the GIS data then.
The GIS data is compiled by Central Office in Tallahassee. They often have things mixed up with the various districts. For instance the GIS Data has shown U.S. 92 as extending south along SR 687 to the east end of I-175 and SR 594. This clearly has never been signed. That said, I showed the Daniel Day post to Brent and he decided to check it out on his way into the office this afternoon. He told me that CR 54 is indeed signed in place of SR 54 east from SR 581 to U.S. 301 in Zephyrhills. However, SR 581 is still signed. So the contract already called for replacing the signage, despite the transfer not yet being official. Not really a big surprise to see that in government...
So dropping FL54Zep definitely makes sense. For FL581, since there is an
FDOT Resurfacing project slated for next year, sign changes likely won't take place until that work is wrapping up.
And a separate aside, expect SR 687 in St. Petersburg to be truncated south of the shared end point of U.S. 19 ALT and U.S. 92. The city requested a maintenance transfer recently. Also the short SR 575 in northeastern Pasco County is going to be dropped soon. SR 50A through Brooksville will change, as it will soon be discontinuous once the U.S. 41/98 realignments are signed. The more than likely scenario is that SR 50A will be retained on the leg west from U.S. 98/SR 700 to SR 50. Brent suggested to the guy in charge of transfers at District 7 that it should be renumbered instead, but we'll see if that gets any traction.
Lastly, another long range plan that Brent told me about is that eventually U.S. 98 will be realigned out of Brooksville along SR 50 west to CR 485, and in place of CR 485 north back to U.S. 98 on Ponce De Leon Boulevard. CR 485 is already part of the truck bypass around Brooksville, so it will be a logical move once maintenance transfers between the state and county between the two respective roadways.
