AL: US231BusOza (missing route?)
« on: January 16, 2018, 04:50:22 pm »
Discovered a well signed business route for US231 in Ozark Alabama that is not in the HB. From the south, it follows AL123 into town. Downtown, US231Bus turns left following AL27 back to US231. Attached is a picture at the intersection of AL123 and AL27 in downtown Ozark.

I have no idea if this is an officially recognized route, but it is signed better than many. Should this be added to the HB?

As best as I can tell, it was never requested through AASHTO.

So how does TM deal with well-signed, "unofficial" US business routes? Are they left out?

It wouldn't add any extra mileage to clinch if the AL state route system were active, so in the long run may not matter. Just something I noticed on a trip and wasn't sure what (if anything) should be done.

And AASHTO isn't really a big decision-maker for this type of thing.

And AASHTO isn't really a big decision-maker for this type of thing.

Some states run this kind of stuff past AASHTO (for example, lately a lot of that has been coming out of Arkansas), while others pretty much ignore AASHTO except for the most major changes. I don't know where Alabama is on that spectrum, but froggie would know better.

If ALDOT had submitted this to AASHTO, what's the likelihood that it would have been denied?

Minimal, especially if ALDOT requested it at the same time they 4-laned US 231 (sometime in the '60s there, IIRC).

It's signed well enough to where I opted to create a file for this business route and submitted a pull request this afternoon.  However, Beca, the business route actually uses AL 249 between AL 27 and US 231 on its "northern" end...it doesn't stay on AL 27 to US 231.
